Interesting thread this one and I can certainly see why the casualties cause a bit of a kerfuffle. Overall I like the game and feel that in general its getting better and gives a good game, whether this is 'realistic' is a matter of much debate, but generally its pretty okay. The casualties in terms...

A a test for terrain selection myself and my regular gaming buddy both picked extremely open terrain for a few games and both picked extremely dense terrain for a few other games and guess wahat, we ended up with some of the same maps in both sets of games, and furthermore, the density of terrain wa...

The system for choosing the maps sounds fair enough, its just a shame that there are:

a. So many VERY similar maps

b. So many VERY similarly ridiculous maps

c. A designers fetish for terrain that diagonally bisects the maps

d. A designers fetish for lots of water features

The need to dress ranks and take a breather etc. is a very real one in any ancient or medieaval army purely for practical reasons. In melee people people get injured and killed and for those beside them, behind them etc. they are a nuisance as they are not standing in line anymore. What do you do, c...

Well, I have played a couple of times as the Carthaginians myself and having lost the first game due to me stupidly expecting my elephant to damage the very disordered Roman cavalry I lost and my wing fell with it, so back to the drawing board I played against them again and this time I beat them. A...

With a 500pt Mid-Republican Roman Army I always take 2 field commanders, and both of them I put as veteran triarii to go with my veteran legions. Using just one cmmander is chancing ruin despite any extra benefit of units, but having said that if you can make it work then thats great. There is a bal...

From what I have read on the subject the fatigued Roman unit was withdrawn during an ebb in the melee, in other words what was assumed to happen is that both sides would back off from time to time to redress ranks, catch a breather etc. If you look at video footage of police vs crowds you do see muc...

Apparently modern police shield wall tactics are copied from Imperial Roman infantry tactics. I used to have a couple of mates who were cops and also wargamers and this is what they were telling me, they also asserted that most crowds react much in the same way as barbarian hordes and the police tra...

No its not. We orginally allowed Romans to swap BG's but it didnt seem right at the scale we were dealing with and so dropped it. A huge amount of thought has gone in to the rules, about 4 years of development by a dedicated team and countless ideas have been trialed and discarded. Well, in exactly...

You know, it may be just as well to not play against someone who you don't get on with or you know has resigned for no apparent reason in games against you before. I know that you probably can't refuse a player when they accept a game but maybe this could be a possible way forward, so that the chall...

I really can't see how a 400pt army will beat a 600pt one regardless of lists involved. If the army point differential isn't so acute then yes certain armies have distinct advantages over others. In the match-up of Carthos and Romans I prefer the Roman list but have no trouble winning with either. ...

I simply deploy and use the romans as near as I can that makes them look historical and play historical within the framework of the rules. As for him, he knows his carthaginians and does likewise, but it seems he couldn't get a win even if it was buy one get one free, and I will reiterate the point ...

I guess the key is timing.. The carthos( In Italy) have 8 superior cavalry and 4-6 light cavalry., coupled with an elephant you have a formidible flank/strike force You can still afford to by all 9 superior spears and about 16 medium impact foot... Even those spear armed cavalry can damage legions ...

Hmm, historcially I dont believe the Carthos had either the quality or the #'s when facing Rome What they had was a more flexible army in terms of combined arms and , well, one superior tactical leader.... Exactly! This is my point. Even with 50% more points and that means a great deal more men he ...

In the end, FoG PC is not FoG TT. The most obvious difference is the BG sizes since FoG PC has only individual units. In truth, it plays more like single bases than BGs. I don't see this ever changing. The answer may be to give some armies a few extra points (maybe 50) when you play if you have fou...

Are Some Armies Being Robbed or Artificially Rewarded?

I have been playing LOTS of games as Mid-Republican Roman vs Carthaginians against a friend of mine as a prelude to a campaign on the Punic Wars. The problem we have found is that it seems as Carthaginians he is severely hampered if not being robbed against the Romans due to the quality of his troop...

ROR Carthaginian Error

In the Carthaginian army the Lucanians are spelt Lucianians which is incorrect.
