Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Well, MDH - look at issues that occurred around units charging when out of command range - poorly expressed rule and a contradictory quick reference sheet in the book. Look at the issue of firing from buildings - clear statement in the book - unit in building fires at any unit outside of the buildin...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Another question/problem for big games : The battlefield was crowded . Many large units had some difficulty to find some space to charge . Would it not be possible to allow large units to contract " en ordre profond" in order to enable them to charge if, and only if, the way is bloqued by...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Hy , This WE we played Waterloo ( afirst test ) and having had to read a lot about Waterloo here are some ideas that might interest you or be rejected as useless : - Overhead artillery fire : The famous "grand battery" started shelling allied positions around 1 PM and shot over the ridge ...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Just don't give us a situation where: The rules(often poorly written and explained after lengthy argument by way of internet forum) always beats the man. I agree with this, well said. I have to say had I not become an author and therefore with a role of listening and responding on FOG(N) I should h...

Re: Triumph of Nations Errata

Not sure if this has come up before. In the 1809 Austrian infantry corps on the Danube it specifically mentions that advanced guard mixed division can have an artillery attachment but at the end of the list it limits artillery attachments to 1 per infantry division. I assume you can actually take a...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

I've read as many as THREE whole books about the entire period and think it is fair to say that anyone with a funny sounding name is probably 100% wrong with anything they say... These rules have (and in some cases HAD) some very good features - the lack of extensive 'national character' rules is s...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

On this thread much has been made of Oman. James R Arnold in a series of papers published as part of the Napoleon series( for which he on a prize) is critical of Oman - and Fortescue. He says among many other things And I wouldn't worry about thinking you'll be accused of being Anglo-centric, you'v...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Shadow, i have one thing to say here,....i agree yes and no...but there is one thing i am afraid of ...might it be that english speaking people are relying to much on english speaking historians and thus might miss what russian or french historians write. you all quote only english speaking histori...

Re: Triumph of Nations Errata

Brings up a question that has always bothered me, in 1805 the Allies made the first move towards the french at Austerlitz. Yet they have to be the ones standing still during almost all 1805 games as they have a low initiative. Granted Nappy drew them into a trap and he managed to exploit their move...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Squares etc ADonald Without getting into point by point pointless ping pong around the globe I shall say this. We do not set ourselves up to be historians like Nafziger,Digby Smith Gates et al and do their work and primary research for which there was neither the time nor resource, even assuming we ...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Squares It is of course not disputed that there were times when more than one battalion formed a single square. I will not bore folk with a long list of examples to illustrate that. But before addressing that it is as well to note Nafziger’s general comment in "Imperial Bayonets " under “M...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

There is a story in military planning circles that a camel is a horse designed by a committee. Let's not make v2 into a camel. Every rule set ever written is a reflection of the author(s) vision / interpretation of history and the best ones remain true to that vision. I was part of FoGAM v2 beta te...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

I get the feeling its going to be pretty hard to come up with a revised treatment of Light Infantry that does not displease as many as it pleases - at least on these pages. And they may please nobody. We will need to look at, and people will have to have tested , the combined effect of changes parti...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Re skirmish order I suppose one could distinguish between a capability that was exercised well and trained for by some and one that could be and was done, but less expertly, by others , and there is a distinction between that order as a target and for movement ( given terrain) and that order as an e...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

A light infantry unit, made up of battalions of light infantry, would have many more skirmishing companies available than a line infantry unit made up of battalions of line infantry A common misconception, at least concerning feench and frenchlike organisation . Light does not mean skirmish . A lig...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

Re regular light Infantry as such as many will know I have wondered if we overdid them but were keen to reflect them as one of the more significant tactical developments of the era - from 1792. There were not that many below division level . The idea is that a light infantry unit is either 100% ligh...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

For artillery tactics I would councel this link http://www.reenactor.ru/ARH/PDF/McConachy.pdf It seems that the artilery firewall tactic was a real one . The only item missing for now is the size of the guns but I would suspect to be mobile and "rush" to the ennemy and manhadled it would ...

Re: FOGN 2nd Edition

artillery and cavalry attachments One or more of the above should bring them more in line with the effectiveness of other attachments and probably make sense historically as well, after all the guns in attachments are the same as the ones in units and they sure cant move 6" every turn while fi...
