Send Error Log

I had a technical issue where an unknown error occurred and I was unable to process an online game turn, to the point where it timed out and then asked me to log in again. It locked up upon me doing so and I had to use the task manager to end the game. Is this error message normal? It's now asking m...

Re: Losing your General

King Pyrrhus fell to a roof-tile thrown by an angry housewife in a relatively minor skirmish. To avoid losing your generals so easily go to settings and turn off the Angry Housewife option. I do seem to remember at least one medieval commander being felled by a thrown cooking pot. Still, such event...

Losing your General

I have now lost my best general in the very first skirmish of a campaign two games back to back. These were routs in my favour, not battles where the units involved got badly mauled. Either I have been incredibly unlucky, or this desperately needs a balance change. The loss of a general should be a ...

Re: Game too hard for the AI?

The AI can sometimes struggle in games if patches introduce new conditions that weren't in the original play tests. Is there anything new from vanilla that the AI might be having trouble wrapping its head around? I haven't really played enough against the AI to participate in this fully. It can actu...

Re: On skirmishers

Gray Fox, what was your sample size? Did you run the test once or repeatedly? Also, if you're reloading a save, I think the die rolls seed or something, as I fought the same battle multiple times once and seemed to get the same result each time. Possibly a mechanic to prevent save scumming.

Re: Mathematicians, playing Empires often makes me tired.

I tend to develop a routine. -First, I survey the overall situation (fronts, diplomacy, etc.) -Then, I make military decisions that are clear yes and no choices (move here, evade here, etc.). -Then, I rearrange any pops that need rearranging. -Then, I decide on building. -I make diplomatic offers an...

I am getting Noric steel armor, Thoroughbred mounts and Reflex bows, but these items don't show up anywhere on the actual units that I can perceive. How do they show up?
I think your army has to visit the region those items are in. Possibly spend a turn there, I'm not sure.

Attack and Defence Again

Yes, I know, another incredibly specific mechanics thread. I think I need to turn all of the kind responses I've had for these into a guide at some point. If I am besieging a province, and my enemy moves to relieve that province, will I be attacking or defending? What if the province falls to siege,...

Re: On skirmishers

I was under the impression that it was the 'ranged attack' value which determines your chances of hitting a unit, and the 'max damage' which determines how much fatigue each arrow causes. The best skirmishers I've found are the archers; 9 ranged attack (8 in the case of mountaineers) and max damage ...

Re: Is Sparta unplayable

I've seen Sparta do very well if they can advance up the Peloponnese peninsula. A high quality army is actually very well suited to warfare on the hilly, restrictive Greek mainland. Just stay out of Epirus's mountains. Find a way to somehow take down Macedon as well and you'll be swimming in legacy ...

Re: Multiplayer blitzkrieging thoughts

I'd be interested to hear from more experienced players who have played Antigonids and come out the worse. I wouldn't describe myself as an 'experienced' player; I've played a handful of multiplayer games, none of which have yet gone to completion, two Antigonid games where I have mostly come out on...

Re: Multiplayer blitzkrieging thoughts

In game terms? Yes, they had no means to recruit a massive horde of experienced heavy infantry like they can do in game now. While there most definitively were manpower available, the experienced veterans were enjoying their retirement, and it would have required massive amounts of gold to actually...

Re: Multiplayer blitzkrieging thoughts

Well, aside from being horribly outnumbered, was there anything physically stopping Antigonus from reuniting the old Alexandrian empire? He wasn't stopped by his empire becoming too big and collapsing under its own weight. He lost because he was defeated militarily and killed.

Re: Multiplayer blitzkrieging thoughts

On the other hand, the Antigonid wars were originally over within nine years of the start date, and Antigonus was in his grave a trampled corpse. So if anything, the war tends to drag on longer than historical, and often with a less-decisive outcome. I kind of wish I knew more about the Seleucid-Egy...

Re: Multiplayer blitzkrieging thoughts

Blitzkrieger here. I can confirm this. I think part of it, particularly with the eastern factions, is inherent in the set-up. The Antigonids, Seleucids and Ptolemies are basically three culture-starved pit dogs thrown into a ring to fight for meat. The Antigonids have to defeat the Seleucid-Ptolemai...

Re: Return of pursuing madness

People also forget how often you can take advantage of pursuits to get a unit out of a perilous situation by gaining xtra movement and ignoring zoc’s or by gaining an xtra move to charge an enemy that would have been just outside reach. You gotta weigh the risks and take the good results with the b...

I think walls might help? Anything that gives you those extra garrisons, even though the walls themselves probably aren't useful. (I'm still a firm believer in walling up wherever possible for other reasons.)

Re: A Guide to the True Rules of FoGII

If you play well, you will generally win, even against the odds... but that won't stop the game from giving you several unnecessary heart attacks along the way. Your elite units fighting downhill will get a freak double morale drop and lose the battle for you, and then your militia will fight on fiv...
