I would definitly suggest a nomad army for that (generic nomads can be used for Huns, various chinese nomads, mongols, khazars, etc and used historically against Romans, Chinese, byzantines, arabs, medevials, samurai) and if you are not too subjective could cover skythians as well matching up agains...

firstly, my usual regarding of the dismounting rule is frustration trying to recreate arbedo (have to buy extra knights and dismount some as a reserve) however this is the only reference I can think of of dismounting during a battle. would a rule to say all dismounters must be declared before deploy...

v 2.0 army lists

firstly i would say let the version 2 rules dry run a little while before amending the lists, just to check the new rules implications (but then from experience i would expect this of the FOG team) as to lists, I would be inclined to look at all the barbarian lists (they seem far more bland than act...

To be hoest i think a number of medevial polearm troops are better represented in the game as spear ( probabaly offensive spear as they were generally better troops than the spear levies) but that is a case by case basis mostly for those that habitually fought off mounted and they loose this option ...

loks over generaled. could lose a TC to get more troops Protected or unprotected shooty cav need a general to babysit them and possibly be superior. so drop one bg of cav to light horse and it could work? I have used Hunnic cavalry (cav ptd, sup bw swd undr) as allies for my sassanids. worked okish ...

why the FC. Not sure how it fits the doctrine. in period the armies you are likely to have to deal with are sassanids (undrilled in period) huns picts palmyrans and other romans. Huns are typical shooty cavalry and will be a reasonable match i think. Other romans will try and avoid your cavalry whil...

ok i think the problem may be more subtle than it appears . the issue i can see is that while the top level players find the armies pretty even, those of lesser skill (such as myself) find it easier to use certain armies, and the steppe types are one of the easier ones to get to grips with (get open...

ianb Is that with or without serbians? ;-) Actually in regards to ally commanders if you design the army well they are not that bad. For example syrian city states army i use has a crusader ally with 6 crusader knights , 4 crusader crossbow and 4 spear. The l.ast 2 bgs sit by the camp having been de...

There are answers to the light horse etc (cheers to dave r etal who have mentioned solutions) However a fair number of better players including some who were involved in development like playing light horse armies this makes them seem bet...

the level of skill and equipment is more reflected by superior and armour quality rather than offensive or defensive spear. Defensive spear mearly indicates no tendancy to charge in in spearwall formation. poor protected italiote hoplites should not be tangling with later german armoured mercenaries...

I'm fairly sure Alexander fought the skythians , I'll check my Arrian to see if i can figure out more info, but i seem to rememebr fighting them while crossing a river and using artillery to cover the crossing....of course i can't see us re-creating that encounter ;-) I suggested macedonians for thi...

Ok Dave, how do you deal with light horse (using macedonians or persians for example since they historically should get to do so)?

Ok this problem is not unique to FOG IIRC DBM had some similar issues (remeber which armies dominted there?) and WAB as well. one of my first WAB competition games was Skythians vs Hoplites. very boring for both players, despite our best efforts. It seems to be a problem on all ancients sets as the ...

couple of possibilities as usual 4 tc or ic + 2 tc would be good though with the set up you have, declare your cinc as a TC (menelaues) then 2 TC subs (Ajax and Achilles) finally one sub as FC (odysseus) (please note spelling will be off, i protest my dyslexia ;-) ) his opens up flank march options ...

Ok a couple of comments i have had from freinds who have tried FOG and DBM, but normally play WAB, 40K or FOW firstly the "lots of shoving and tokens but you don't seem to be doing much" this has been said a number of times to me, it can be both a good and a bad thing, but if your tourney players ar...

to be honest it sounds like a combination of things getting people wound up here. Firstly the attituude of some gamers to getting a draw. Either 'i don't want to lose my precious points '(in suitable gollum turn of phrase) or 'i was robbed of my win m'lud' ;-) Secondly the mismatch of armies. With n...

Fair point dave. However are flank marches all that common? And to use them every game surely we would see more field commanders who never seem to get out these days?

how about half the army attrition points in the camp and each destroyed/fled bg only worth 1 ?

Pretty radical compared to other suggestions but the camp becomes pretty vital

i'll agree there and makes sense of the 2 attrition for falling back off the table idea.
