Re: Points Revision

I haven't played FOGR for quite a while but was just reading an old thread on Determined Horse being a bit subpar. Bearing that in mind (and admittedly a slightly oblique solution to the topic) I think what really should be changed in FOGR is making Superior break at 50% base losses (ie same as Aver...

Commanded shot - possible rule change ?

Now that commanded shot can no longer initiate contact with enemy BG's I'm wondering whether they should no longer be able to exert a Restricted Area as well (this would bring them into line with battle wagons and artillery which similarly cannot charge or intercept).

Any thoughts ?

huguenot 15mm figs

Howdy, I'm hoping to put together a Huguenot army (1577 onwards so based around pistol packing Curassiers 8) ) in 15mm and wonder if anyone has any ideas on some good figures - particularly for the Cuirassiers and Reiters. I know Essex has some - anyone know if they paint up well ? Or indeed if ther...

Re: Noob comment - edge of world

Whilst this is theoretically possible, it's never been a problem in any game I've played. It would not be easy to achieve, and also the BG would effectively be out of the game. Oddly I have seen it used, in only the third or fourth game I've played in. My friend with a single mounted BG on his defe...

Noob comment - edge of world

As a relative newcomer to FoGR I've noticed (although happy to be corrected if I'm wrong) that it's possible for a BG (if less than 1 Base width in depth) to park its rear edge on a table edge to prevent being flank charged. Has anyone (ie those worthies who know the rules far better than I) given a...

Re: Medieval
I'm more prepared to accept the effect of LF support shooters being a reasonable abstraction of skirmishers sallying out in front and retiring behind as the charge comes in. Or a limited number of overhead shooters well back in the formation, whose effect is therefore lessened. Tak...

Re: Medieval

I'll point out that I do disagree that MF bow bow are totally useless. I find them quite useful. A couple of BGs of 4 unprotected MF bowmen often make it into my Foederate Roman army. Hold on - have I missed something - I thought Foederates only got 0-6 MF archers ? :D And I'm sure this is a perfec...

Re: Roman Foederati cavalry

Zocco, are you actually familiar with the history of this period? The Roman state (or states actually, if you want to be picky) weren't exactly at the top of their game. Hi ShrubMik, Am I familiar with the period ? I would say moderately so. I actually think that question would be better asked of t...

I think you might find that Elton (who has at least reviewed the evidence) comes down on the side that the Roman army was still well equipped with metallic ...

Re: Roman Foederati cavalry

There may be armoured men in there, just not enough to justify classing the BG as armoured maybe. The separate list of their own have very few armoured lancers in them. And you don't get armoured lancers as allies in the period for at least the Goths (and probably the rest). So why should any men s...

Re: elephants

2. Skilled sword - yes only losing HW cancellation ability. But you need to consider it with the following V2 change; A single level of armour advantage does not give a + POA if this would result in an overall ++ POA. Put together sup armd ssword legionaries in melee vs barbarian protected sword is...

Re: elephants

In V1 I never liked fighting elephants with Romans. Clearly, V2 will be even more diffcult. With all the negative changes I do not expect that I will use Romans much in V2. A 48 point pike block is much cheaper AND effective. Yes - the V2 changes to elephants have completely skewed the impact foot/...

Re: elephants

Martin
I agree they should be more powerful at impact, as that is their great strength to make up for some of those weaknesses. Its a little ridiculous to give them the same dice as infantry! Re: Can MF ( impact foot ) throw Javelins in the shooting ph

I don't think anyone will be swayed by statements that the roman LF practised with gladius or that they should have more LF because you have 8 bases of them. You'd need to have a battle account or two showingthat the swords make a difference in real battles or showing more specialist LF than 4 base...

Re: Can MF ( impact foot ) throw Javelins in the shooting ph

Not to get personal zocco, but if anyone is hard done by.....its Indian archers, definitely not Romans. I have a 25mmm Indian army that I've used off and on for 35 years, but no more. The elephants are interesting, the 4 horse chariots are very interesting, but the archers who make up the bulk of t...

Re: Can MF ( impact foot ) throw Javelins in the shooting ph

I wrote a while back that FOG was an anti-Roman set of rules (or lists at least) Against which of their historical opponents do you feel that Romans get a bad deal? Good question. Leaving rules issues aside my comment has to do with interpretation of evidence which tends to be very restrictive for ...

Re: Can MF ( impact foot ) throw Javelins in the shooting ph

Sounds like they want to go back to more complicated rule systems like WRG7. Actually what I really wanted was EQUALITY. (and no offence to bbotus intended :) ) I didn't really expect to get any traction with this idea . The real reason people don't support the idea is simply - they don't want it. ...

Re: Can MF ( impact foot ) throw Javelins in the shooting ph

I would imagine the right questions for legionary use are did they use the darts while in formed line of battle and, if so, did it have a material impact on the battle? I think we can safely answer yes to both of those :D Well, I can't because I have no idea. What primary sources describing which b...
