What has happened?

I've been away for a couple of years and find on my return that FoG has gone to cover. I have a clean slate to start an army (after all my others have been stolen) and it looks like there are no wars.

Sitrep, please.

...I assume you mean that the close combat types are more useful than the archers? I guess that makes sense as the Colonial Spanish can have lots and lots of cheap shooters. I certainly can't say that the shock 'askaris' would be better than the missile, but at least the decision tree is simplified...

Nice report, and a solid win for what looks like something of a scrub army. The cavalry battle sounds like something of an upset, or gendarmes really are a points sink.

Thanks for writing this up, and happy to read about a Tudor win.

Can the troops not be modeled as a fairly generic melee troop type, thus satisfying both 'light spear' or 'impact foot' game distinctions?

If they could the whole issue would be simplified to a choice between melee or missile.

At a superficial glance no one had a real battle plan other to advance and find out how effective the bow shooting was. "Good morning, good morning!" the General said, When we met him last week on the way to the line. Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of 'em dead, And we're cursing his...

I am heartened to read that earlier armies are viable against later ones. Perhaps the initial impression that later armies had a clear superiority is wrong, or at least not always correct.

THE CAVALRY HAS ARRIVED!

Well, the order is in! All too small, as the minis budget had previously been blown on a half off sale elsewhere, but I am glad I emptied the piggy bank for these figure. In a nutshell, they are large and they are splendid. A command pack, some cavalry and a unit of foot archers comprised the order....

As always, the Madaxeman's AARs are entertaining and useful. The descriptions somewhat counter the conventional wisdom that earlier armies are not viable against later armies.

At least, older armies with a significant core of Switzers, anyway . . .

I think you will do very well with this range. The overlap between Renaissance and 'Horse and Musket' will get you extra sales I am sure.

If I did not have a cubic foot of unpainted WSS I would be very tempted indeed.

Correct me if I am wrong, but except for Eoghan Ruadh O Neill wouldn't these work for just about any ECW army? I like the more modest kit.

Ah, but you see I am cursed with the need to build armies that interest me historically, whether the lists have been kind or not.

Otherwise I would be looking at Swedes or Imperials, or perhaps Imperials or Swedes.

Sort of like the old Holy Trinity of Seleucids, Late Romans and Teutonic Knights.

Not a Roman lapdog here. It's just that I usually play solo and I prefer to have at least one historical opponent for each army. I've bee interested in an Italian Ostrogothic army ever since Phil advised that they were f***ing marvellous as an army. And the order is in. Well that is good. For a min...

These are not something I wish to have. These are something I SHALL have! Agree. I SHALL have these too. Are these size-wise compatible with Legio Heroica (i.e, late romans)? Oh yeah? Well, my first order is already in, and with some sneaky little surprises as well! How you like them apples, hah? B...
