I do not underestimate the effect of +1 o the bell curve. In fact you underestimate the difference incurred by the representation of bases from table to pc! Typically units on the table will number 4-12 bases. The full range being 2-12 of course. In fact, looking at the various army designs in the t...

If you want to bring things in line with that table then really you need to grant a universal +2 to anarchy checks.

I agree with rbs. There is a difference between bugged anarchy and the incidence of anarchy. I've explained elsewhere why I think the incidence is approximately 3x too high compared to the tabletop due to the fact a pc counter represents 2-3 bases whereas a tabletop formation contains 2-12 bases. Th...

No battle plans, no maneuver, no cunning tactics, not trying to use terrain to your advantage, not defending a position or doing a holding action on one side of the battlefield and attacking at another, not trying the get aroudn the flanks... While I think anarchy rules are in desperate need of a f...

One good trick is a damn sight better than a dozen poor ones...

I've been a but slower today, sorry.

Lysimachos, I'll be able to accept your challenge tomorrow. Look forward to it.

That's true. I'm wondering if anyone has examples of French knights on foot being stopped by arrowfire (as opposed to the slaughter of the less well armoured Scots spearmen on numerous occasions which I think the game probably does okay (though I've yet to test it). I know French armour was generall...

So 50% more shooting on the approach? An argument for MF firing with 4 dice rather than three, perhaps (and artillery with 6 rather than 4).

Why then in my 3 tests of 50 units do superior pikes anarchy substantially less than average ones?

I shall run more tests as time allows to see if the first batch were freaks.

Well that would depend on a host of factors, not least terrain and how keen the knights were to maintain at least some order. Anyway, there's no doubt that most longbow fire was indirect and probably opened at around 200yds, maybe a bit more. It's extraordinarily unlikely the knights would have been...

I'm mulling over the battle write up...

Grumbly's propoganda is much better than mine. I spent ages looking for his units that had surrounded me and all I saw was routing light foot and a couple of cavalry skulking behind some rocky outcrops hoping they wouldn't be noticed.

There's definitely a difference equating to a +1 on the dice. that might equate to re-rolling 1s... hmm... 10/36 chance of failing as drilled in command. Failures with possible rerolls are 7 of those 10. So 3/10 are certain failures (3/36) 2/10 fail 1/6 of the time (17% so .34/36) 3/10 (approx) fail...

So I gave them thir ditch (which gave them an extra's turn shooting and improved their impact chances a lot and melee chances a bit. The result? French win 4/17 to 18/17. the French were more badly mauled than previously but still quite an easy win, even with the flanking archers getting some rear c...

You're right, I misread, sorry.

So the coding is correct, it just gives undesireable pc results.

Excepy why are drilled superiors anarching less than drilled averages? Does their quality bonus apply?

I deployed 15 longbowmen in a line on flat ground. I set the two units on either flank forward one and two hexes so as to allow flank fire. Two foot knight generals supported the line so as to have the longbowmen in command (and also to fight if required). The knights were 16pts, the longbows 9. Bot...

I ran my 50 unit test for the Swiss... same as before, all in command, 5 front rank leaders. Run three times, 8 anarchied each time or 16%, approximately 2/3 as much as average pikes did. I presume therefore that quality does apply to anarchy tests. I notice from the Help document that drilled shoul...

Put your generals in the front rank and those numbers drop considerably They do not. Those figures are for front rank generals (a field general every 10th unit to ensure command). What you tend to see with the Swiss (in my fairly extensive experience) is that they do not anarchy because they are ad...

I find there are quite a few maps that allow archers to use terrain, either to hold the main line or to work one or other flank. Even a hill can make the difference (and steep hills even better). I'm going to run a test fight tomorrow and see what happens and then what difference adding terrain make...
