Re: Why do units have separate attack and defense values?

Yes, precisely. It really doesn't make any sense (as I pointed out in my thread on the battle system).

Re: Slitherine acquires the Master of Magic franchise

I am old enough to remember MoM fondly. And several more recent 'knockoffs/homages' somewhat less fondly. And then we have AoW, doing all the same things rather better. Hopefully something interesting can be done with the franchise.

Re: Let's talk about army stacks

8 Spartiate, 8 Cretan archers. Flanks aren't a thing, so no need for cavalry or other troops (so long as you aren't in mountains or forest, etc)

Also check how many of your troops have the siege ability
None whatsoever (I am Sparta). I presume they still can starve them out though? OK, I don't assume, I am trying to figure it out.

Re: Siege factors

I recently sat my Spartan army outside Athens for lots of turns. I didn't do any damage to them, they didn't seem to be in any discomfort at all. I cannot guarantee that the sea blockade was in place every turn...I was trying, but it was patchy. If there is a turn without sea blockade, does the food...

At least you'll get something to iterate through regions idle and with slots in the next patch...

That makes perfect sense...but how do you tell that they do that?

Siege factors

IMHO, the attacker should get +1 per turn of continuous siege, representing the possibility of starving the defenders out (eventually).

Related, I cannot quite work out the role of navies in a siege. Is there one?

Re: Guns, Germs and Steel

Great book. I think with some thinking about the design, and not too much fuss, improvements could be made. A mod also sounds like an interesting project.

Re: Tactical abstract battle system

Adding:

- Remove the attack/defence stats of troops. It doesn't really make any sense as far as I see it. The strength of a hoplite phalanx was unaffected by whether it strategically moves into battle or waits for battle.

Re: Sparta: What is the plan?

Yes, I figured out that Spartiates, although heavily penalized, can absolutely take cities despite the walls. That is now my plan, once I deal with a frighteningly strong Macedonia. I have just woken up to the fact that Sparta is not the capital of Greence, Aetolia is :-( So now my troops are being ...

Get a mercenary centre and get mercenary in infantry.
I have a mercenary centre in Greece but I still can only recruit Spartans, not mercenaries. Do you see something else?

Tactical abstract battle system

I use the in-game battle system to resolve all battles. I quite like it, and think it presents some interesting challenges for the player to balance their troops etc. However, some things seem a little bit wrong, and it could be so much MORE interesting again with more work. Currently battles are su...

Sparta: What is the plan?

Does anybody have a winning start strategy for Sparta? They seem super awkward, especially as you can't get any troops early that have siege factors...as soon as you see a wall, just leave.

Re: Is this supposed to happen?

Just happened to me as well vs the world leading Antiochus, who then disappeared when their capital randomly fell. Hilarious. And yes, new factions emerged to take their spot, including the return of a new Ptolemaic Empire. Such a cool mechanic.

Re: Population and power curve

Well, that sounds good. I wonder if the simplest 'quick fix' might be to simply alter the 'food excess required for next population point' curve (I think there is one). Combine this by preventing farms and some other food buildings in desert areas, and altering the food return from different types o...

Population and power curve

I am only now getting into the later game (Turn 130 currently on my Rhodes game). I can still only imagine Turn 500. I note that the map is full of people. The population overlay shows most of the world with 'High' population levels. This also means there are tons of buildings and trade goods everyw...

Re: Lands of No Bonuses??

Correct. Well, they can get bonuses if they produce the goods themselves. (I learned this the hard way on my first game - I think I had in mind that they got bonuses from regions in the same province, which is wrong)

Re: Mercenaries: Keep Fielded or Can??

Playing as Rhodos I kept them because:

- They were experienced, and my other troops are not
- Money becomes a strength, and the limits are set by manpower and metal. Rhodes ends up being very rich (if you get the trading right).
