Re: Alternate history speculation & campaigns

@kondi754: I feel like this thread has been hijacked enough as it is so I'll keep it (relatively) brief. Ultimately this is all about a game and there will undoubtedly be some speculative scenarios that are more far fetched than others, though I imagine the attraction of a "What If Hitler Does Not I...

Re: Alternate history speculation & campaigns

I don't think that I engage in hero worship of Zhukov but I would not agree that he was just a frontal assault butcher. Most professional military historians respect his strategic and operational skills while also critiquing his authoritarian command style as well as his stubborn persistence in the ...

Re: Alternate history speculation & campaigns

Not really convinced Soviet/Russian history engages in any more or less self-delusion than U.S or German, but there is no worse source than "Viktor Suvorov."

Re: Alternate history speculation & campaigns

The Italians had some tough units, but few people in the country were excited about Mussolini's imperial project. The Japanese Army just didn't have the available manpower to mount another major land campaign until China surrendered (the Catch 22 of their war effort...they needed to acquire material...

Re: Order of Battle: Sandstorm - The Italian armed forces

I hope the Italian infantry isn't represented as auxiliary forces. I want full command of my Italians as core units. Unless the core is balanced along the lines of 70% Italian versus 30% German, I doubt that would be the case. If it is around 50/50, that would represent approximately the right bala...

Re: Order of Battle: Sandstorm - The Italian armed forces

It will be interesting to see what the balance of Italian versus German units ends up being seeing as there were around nine Italian divisions at El Alamein versus four German ones. I'm guessing many of the Italian foot infantry divisions will be represented as auxiliary forces.

Re: Order of Battle vs historical realities

From previews, it looks as though at least one of Sandstorm's fourteen scenarios will be a speculative "what-if" one (Malta). Most World War II buffs have read about the hypothetical victories which Rommel and the Afrika Korps could have gone on to win "if only Hitler had released one or two more di...

Re: Order of Battle vs historical realities

Well, it's at least nice to be called useful... Needless to say, it's a controversial topic and will probably never be definitively resolved, but I'm not sure that an endorsement from a pro-Putin politician validates the higher figure. I'm nowhere near as familiar with the reputations of individual ...

Re: Order of Battle vs historical realities

@kondi754: I don't disagree with any of that, but it is still true in general that most Westerners (Americans especially) still err in the opposite direction of overstating the importance of Lend-Lease. The "Eastern Front" is definitely one exception to the rule of "the victors write the history." T...

Re: Order of Battle vs historical realities

@kondi754: I'll defer to your expertise regarding the specifics, as those are interesting facts which I mostly hadn't read before. I did know that some British tanks took part in the fighting near Moscow during the winter of 1941/42, but also read that they were of limited value because they weren't...

Re: Order of Battle vs historical realities

About Lend Lease, it's important to keep in mind that most of the equipment arrived in 1943-1945 (by which time it was certain that Germany could not defeat the USSR). General von Mellenthin bitterly recalled that Western aid to the USSR contributed little to preventing the Wehrmacht from taking Mos...

Re: Order of Battle returns to Asia with Burma Road!

Congrats to the developers for keeping us guessing. Many of us initially thought this might be the next DLC but were then thrown off by the "Heavy Steel" previews. Hope to beta test this and also hope a Japanese-perspective campaign is also in the works. Glad to hear Italian forces are in the works....

Re: Kriegsmarine - Thumbs Down

Kriegsmarine's campaign was pretty short and you barely get to utilize any of the "what if" units. Aside from the obvious shortcoming of having no ship upgrades other than destroyers (although it could be argued that specializations such as radar, fused AA ammo, damage control, etc. were intended to...

Re: Heavy Steel preview

I'm sure the Battle of Kursk is still in the works given the DLCs name and unit preview. Wondering if it will be exclusively player Wehrmacht vs. AI Red Army. Hope to take part in the beta for this one.

I don't think there's a message to that effect, so it's just a question of whether you receive +5 or +7 points after completing the scenario.

You're supposed to get two additional specialization points for taking Modlin.

The Armored Train first shows up in Yugoslavia and is pretty useful.

Re: Tips and Tricks

If any ship with land-supply output is on a port-hex next to a village-/town-/city-hex then it's output is doubled! After noticing in the editor, I saw it's also mentioned in the manual, but I bet not many know that. I guess reading carefully the manual is also a useful tip! :D Recently discovered ...

Re: Kriegsmarine: Thank you

I really liked the Pacific (OOB) and African (Panzer) campaigns and playing the Brits would be nice. Regarding the supply lines, what would you think, regarding the game balance, if the first turn that a unit is cut from it supply, its combat effectivness is only decreased very slighty to allow for...

Re: Kriegsmarine: Thank you

Add Afrika Korps as #11 and the sales will skyrocket for sure! I'm sure that's in the pipeline, although the current supply rules will definitely need to be reworked to do it properly. Rommel's wide outflanking maneuvers around British defensive positions won't play out if the German player has to ...
