Re: Superior pikes charger lancers - and become Fragmented

Wow! Thanks for that, I had to read the explanation twice but that is really interesting, explains why the AI was reluctant to charge the lancers. In my previous game I had a town militia unit (raw hoplites) vs lancers. The lancers sat facing the hoplites without charging them despite being superior...

Really? That is interesting! Same if the lancers charge the pikes?

Superior pikes charger lancers - and become Fragmented

Hi, I was playing a FOG Empires battle where the defenders had two Palace Guard units that were superior pikes with a general attached. I shot at them with one or two slinger units every turn for about five turns without every disrupting them - but by keeping supporting units facing them from differ...

Re: Greek units should be able to recruit a Superior Infantry unit

I just had a fight with a client nation that consisted of only two regions, and its capital was unfortified, yet when I attacked the capital it had a Palace Guard that consisted of two superior pike units. Possibly the 0-2 difference in our generals helped. I attacked with what I thought was a doom ...

Yes, one HMG 42 would have made quick work of those close order formations! As far as I know, The Ballista did not cause an entire formation to drop and hug the ground for dear life.
Except in Gladiator or the Total War series...

Re: Message re: unable to maintain logistics, degraded weapons and armour

Check the build screen for each unit - you require more than just money to maintain units, depending on what they are. Plus they need food, which is taken out of the region where they are situated, and/or one next to it.

Re: Experience enhancing military buildings

Some don't just provide a plus to experience - some provide extra equipment, or infrastructure. Deleting them takes several turns and gives a loyalty penalty. If you get a rebellion you may need them later depending on how your country splits

It was the difference between discussing the capabilities of an HMG, and where to deploy if for greatest affect within an entire defensive position.
Starts trying to work out what FOG unit a HMG is....

Re: What good are fleets?

In Ancient times, pirates were a problem that raises cost so you can use fleet to chase pirates and secure trades routes or even raid enemies trade routes for extra income ( like some total war ). Pirates are generated by independent coastal nations at various places on the map. Depending on your n...

Re: What good are fleets?

If you are laying siege to a coastal town, you need a fleet to be next to it or the siege won't work, food etc will get in. If the town has two sea exits (eg Rhodes), you have to put a fleet in each sea area. If you conquer a coastal region but don't destroy the army, the remnants will attempt to es...

Rebuilding world wonders

So I have conquered the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Tower of Babel. Both say it might be possible to rebuild these crumbling structures. Any hints as to how to achieve this?

Re: Best garrison troops?

If you are being raided, cavalry and light horse seem to be best at preventing raids. It doesn't seem to matter how big the defending force, eventually a "huge raid" will occur and the enemy will succeed (even if you have a palisade - need better fortifications as well). However having cavalry of so...

Re: How does raid work?

Yes raiding is the prime source of income for tribal nations. took me quite a while to work out that to do it, all you do is put an army next to the target and click "raid" - don't tell it to move anywhere.

Re: FOGE : diplomacy overhaul and upgrade

As far as colonies are concerned I think you should be allowed to exchange soldiers for population and leave them behind to form a military colony. This was done by Alexander and the Romans. The restrictions would be: 1. only veteran or wounded soldiers can be left behind - so troops with 3 stars or...

Re: FOGE : diplomacy overhaul and upgrade

So when you have a empty province near your territory you need to colonize it to be able to assimilated . You can colonize a limited number of provinces and need to be ajencent to a develloped enough cities . Armies passing through wilderness provinces should suffer heavy attrition. This should slo...

Re: Too much money?

All I have to do, is build a few units - to find myself short of metal again, probably as I don't worry too much about the size of my armies so I'm only increasing metal by 180 per turn. I remember on my first try at playing this game that metal figures did go through the roof so perhaps it depends ...

Re: How to get archers for Rome

Crete (ie Rhodes) has the best archers but you can also get them in Bithynia, Paphlagonia, Cilicia, Pontus, and Colchis (these are all light infantry archers with the "mountain" ability). You can get slingers in Thracia and Illyria.

Re: Too much money?

I remember thinking I had too much money and what use is it anyway... until I had a rebellion or another state attacked me, and then I was offered a decision that cost 17,000 gold. Now I have 27,000 and I'm wondering what decision will be offered to me that costs that much! I have a large empire and...

there's also a decision that allows you to recruit mercenaries from neighbouring tribes - costs 1000 and instantly puts you into debt and other money troubles but can get you lots of troops when you are in a desperate situation

Re: How is food and infrastructure distributed in a province?

Do these calculations include loyalty effects? If loyalty is at 55% then you only get 55% production etc.
