Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

I've not tried Kursk South. North was not too bad. It really comes down to the title of this thread, using a diverse force, ie a mix of tanks, infantry, artillery and other support units, including air assets, tailored to the terrain and objectives. I have just finished Prokorhovka and obtained a de...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

Decisive Victory! On to Kursk. (I have now hit the soft cap, 95% on the icon for this battle, which is a massive worry as I didn’t think I had many super-units…) New Unit Analysis: (Available midway through Orel): Panzerwerfer 43: I had been looking forward to this, but 1 extra move, less shooting ...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

I’ve had some time with the new units on hand. The Tiger is very nice, especially for taking out the KV’s but I dread the day the anti-Tiger comes out. New upgrades became available mid-way through this battle: The Nashorn and the Wespe. The Tiger and Panther are fine for now. It will be a while be...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

Hrm... I shall have to think about the Gebirgs, the mobility is useful but I'm still iffy on the weak hard attack and lower defence. Further artillery and A/T units might make sense to add now. I'll keep an eye out for the Elefant, if it is weak against air perhaps I'll recruit another SPAA to guar...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

Upgrading for 43 is fairly straightforward. Infantry units should all get upgraded to the 43 version. I find gebirgs to be very useful. The trick is to move them from one close terrain hex to another. As they only use one movement to move on to a hills hex they are pretty tank proof as any tank atta...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

Yes, the first scenario I would describe as a beast. I chose the breakout option for the next scenario (I took a look at both options and really did not like the look of trying to defend the city). When you have room to manoeuvre you can make a difference through tactics. When it is a slugfest it (f...

Re: SE Units in U.S Corps - Tanks

Hello, when can you get Tanks as a SE Units in U.S Corps ? Can you get tanks immediately at the beginning of the campaign or they locked at the beginning ? best regards You cannot get tanks (or tank destroyers) as SE units at all in US Corps with the default equipment file. There simply are no such...

Re: Painted Myself Into an Afrika Korps-ner

So I am in my first AK playthrough and might have bit off more than I can chew. I am in British India on Colonel difficulty, and I have been going after 3 achievements simultaneously: Denied Overstrength, Denied Elite Replacements, and Denied Reinforcements. I have 33 out of 40 deployable units (an...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

Voronezh: PzIIIL and the StugIIIF/8 become available. Back to blitzkrieg tactics supposedly. I updated my PzIII to the N variant, but decided against going for the L on the basis of the N having better defensive attributes. I decided I would use the PzIII as an infantry tank of sorts, due to the hi...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

Simferopol: Back on the offensive, but this was by no means an enjoyable mission. I had several close calls, including one T34/41 hitting a mighty 8-5 on one of my SE PzIII’s… This isn’t like the earlier campaigns where we blitz through, it was more a battle of attrition line by line and although t...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

A concern is that my Panzers are not matching up very well against Russian armour anymore. The BT model is being phased out and whilst I can handle the T34/40, I seem to be struggling with the /41 model and the less said about the giant KV1's the better. My next mission is Simferopol and I will be ...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

Zhurivla to Vyazma Then came Vyazma and the 'passing rain'. Hah, I admit I played this scenario twice because it was so interesting how the random effect of the weather can take hold. So anyway we're in 1942 now, Demyansk Pocket, which I believe is an interesting scenario. I'll play that over the w...

Re: 21 cm artillery

Brummbar, I don't see the usefulness in it. It's an artillery piece that has to be at the front to attack. Meaning it needs a lot of protection. I used it once at kursk and wasn't impressed by it. IDK My current playthrough GC East has just started on the Kursk scenarios in 43. I have been playing ...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

You asked some more questions. My thoughts are - 1. I have not found the PzIIF to be particularly good. It has a bit more survivability than the Sdkfz 232 but shorter movement. I did it to conserve my remaining 232's (which were 3*) until I could upgrade them to 233's. I have the PzIIF's still in my...

Re: Otto Kittel.

They gave Otto Kittel and Walter Nowatny -2 Def heroes, because they were great Fighter Ace's that actually were killed in combat. That is my understanding That is not a fair assessment. Most of the German fighter aces of WW2 died in combat, not because they made mistakes or were beaten by individu...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

It is generally a good idea during the early years of the GC East to take units that have reached the exp cap out for the rest of that campaign and blood new units. You can do this until early 42. Introducing green units from Stalingrad onwards will usually lead to them being targeted and damaged or...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

I am currently working my way through GC 43 East. I'm quite a bit further on, Orel in 43 actually. Your questions are very interesting as I find towed AT to be almost entirely a wasted unit slot. I do use recon in most scenarios (1 unit for each of my main groups). As for the AT, I disbanded the 3.7...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin (blind)

Yes, it is a bit easy at the moment. I do start to struggle at Rommel/Guderian/Manstein but am usually OK at Fieldmarshal. I have come to realise that AAR's are better done as videos. I find it quite difficult to follow replays at times, even for my own battles! So I will be taking a few days to lea...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin (blind)

Kiev or Leningrad? I have no idea apart looking at the campaign tree in the library and a vague recollection that Novgorod could be quite messy in PG2. So let's try Kiev - which brings us to... Zhitomir 30 deployment slots, 11673 prestige, 18 turns. I don't have a lot to say here. I started with my ...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin (blind)

I think you have way more units than you will ever be able to use. The maximum number of units you can deploy in any scenario is 50, and that's only at one scenario (Berlin Redux). The limit for all the other scenarios is at 45 or less. If you have 6 non-SE tank units and 4 fighters at this stage y...
