In the 2nd Macedonian thread, robindavies suggests using peasants (or skirmishers or velites) as pincushions to screen the main body of troops from missile attacks. This seems like good strategy and I also suspect it jives with historical use of skirmishers. In game terms, other than missile protect...

Another point made by Possum in the Unit Types thread: For Heavy Cavalry, once you have Frenzy, consider strongly going after Grand Master Swordsman III so you can buy Teutonic Horses, which may just be the most effective of the "elite" equipment items. Oh, and one last thing. If you're playing as t...

More Possum wisdom on cavalry, actually from the same post as above, from the Unit Types thread: Lavish great love and attention on your heavy cavalry. Upgrade their equipment before any other troops. You will probably only have 3 heavy cavalry units, but they can be your knockout punch if you train...

My thought on this is that the standards, and for that matter all other types of equipment could be more dramatically and cost effectively added to the unit image on the camp screen. What I expected was for my tricked out Legion I with extra armor, grade 4 weapons, standards, etc to look tricked out...

I would be interested to hear other people's ideas about upgrades and equipment for cavarly. Is trample essential or is the XP better spent upgrading their basic combat strength? Are morale upgrades, the noted weakness of Roman heavy cav, like junior officers and purchase of standards equally import...

I've been using the strategy proposed by sum1wun and developed by spedicus and hondsaveg (sp?), to sell all the initial contigents of militia, skirmisher, and scouts for 1 auxilia. This way you end up with a unit that is extremely potent even in the later campaigns, not one that you have to baby and...

Another great tactic by sum1won in the same "what to recruit first" thread. One useful trick with skirmishers is to send them out with a baby sitting unit of heavy cavalry behind. The skirmishers will fire at the enemy, and when they charge into combat, hit disengage immeadeaitly. If all goes well y...

A good tactic against skirmishers from legatus from the "What to recruit first?" thread: I noticed that cavalry is pretty effective against skirmishers(as they should be). Best kills I've gotten when attacking skirmishers from rear, while they've been blocking the cavalry's path while cavalry is mov...

The Possum Approach to Cavalry upgrades and equipment: For cavalry, it's like this - Swordsman, Drill, and Feint, in that order, over and over. At Level 8, I interrupt the cycle to take Trample. At Level 12, Master Swordsman should come up in the rotation. At Level 13, take Frenzy, and your troops b...

Cavalry are pretty solid against both, especially ghosts, who, if I recall correctly, are rather weak against trample. And there are several tricks for exploiting cavalry, most of which possum has seen in multiplayer. Like Possum, I have not seen ghost legions be especially impressed with cavalry. ...

Here's an example of robindavies ideas about using cavalry as decoys. I would love to hear other examples. 2nd ascension of venus just played out in a surprising way for me; and it illustrates how important cavalry are both in the historic sense of strategy, but also for beating the game's AI. I sta...

From robindavies in 2nd Macedonian post: 1. Cavalry is very useful when used properly, esp when dealing with archers and skirmishers. There is nothing worse than watching your best troops get cut to ribbons by a bunch of missile troops that are behind a wall of infantry. Try to use your troops to cu...

Cavalry Tactics
I think many will agree that cavalry units are the most challenging units to use well in LA. There are a lot of great posts about cavalry tactics scattered throughout other topics. I would like to compile them here in a separate thread, one that will hopefully generate some other inputs and ideas.

Back to grammatical and spelling errors. In, I believe, the second ascension of mercury, CoM, the commander wakes up and scouts report a startling landscape, with scorching desserts (as in bananas flambe) abutting snowfields or something. Better proofreading is definitely in order. In fact, better w...

Of course, even if the famous warrior Ajax did have a banner, the fact that your legions can acquire one per unit is a bit of logical problem, of the splinters of the True Cross sort. I suggest we should consider these ornamental banners, perhaps even blessed in a temple (of Ajax) if such a thing ex...

The timing was very tricky on that one. I sent my cavalry against their right flank were they position archers and several warriors. I had to be careful to draw the warriors into open ground, then rode them down with 3 heavy cav, after which 2 units went after the archers, and #3 was freed up to cha...
