I may be completely wrong on this, but going with deeper formations against shooting just strikes me as basically unlikely historically. Deeper formations give shooters a far better target. I would have thought the natural thing to do is spread out a bit, ie. go wider and thinner - and there are a n...

I may try and get to one of the Manchester clubs for a couple of Sundays. Bit of a trek but might be worth it. Won't be until sometime in September though.

I'm in the camp that agrees with Roger. My reading of history is that shooting could shake troops sufficiently so that a charge would break them. I don't know too many cases of troops breaking from shooting alone - although that could be just my ignorance. I would prefer to see the following - shoot...

Thoroughly enjoyed the games at Britcon - my 2nd-7th FoG games. A lot of the rules became a lot clearer once I saw them in action. However I think the mechanism for choosing a flank march goes against the grain of the rules. Apart from when selecting a flank march there is no record keeping. Which m...

Thanks for all the comments. On removal of bases I get the impression that people are playing it as they think it should be done, not as written. I quote the rule 'Close combat: Any front rank base facing the enemy battle group which inflicted most hits on the battle group' Because rear rank fill in...

Thanks for the response Hammy. Couple of follow-ups.... 3. The only way the general could move and remain in contact with his BG would be to go in front of them. Otherwise he loses contact. Is that what happens (I'd have no problem with it if it was). 4. It wasn't possible to step forward to contact...

Observations and queries fro first full game

These are all things that came up in my first full game yesterday. Apologies if they're points we should have been able to find from the rules. But you all know what its like in the first game. Looking forwards to my second game now - a hammering in my Friday night game at Britcon! 1. Observation ra...

You won't be the only one without any idea of what are good/bad matchups. I'll have had just one complete game ever - this Saturday. At least you know how to initiate a combat!

Questions arising from 1st game

1. Is there any practical difference between troops listed as 'core' and 'optional'? Core troops don't always have a non-zero minimum so is it allowable not to have them? We assumed 'core' and 'optional' were merely descriptive. 2. If both sides have a general with opposing BG's, when declaring if a...

Not sure I agree with Roger. I read the rules for the first time a few days ago, and played my first few stumbling moves of a game yesterday. If its recognised that a clarification is needed it should go in the rules now - as a new player it would be more confusing to read the rules, and then have t...

I assume that a terrain piece is lost if i can't be legally placed? Where is the rule stating this?

Follow-up question. Is it compulsory to place a selected terrain piece? Rules don't specify.

Terrain placement

Playing first game so apologies if this has already been addressed.

If a terrain piece has to be placed 'touching side edge - own half' does the terrain piece have to be entirely in own half, or just touching edge on own half, ie. can traverse middle of table?

I'm entered for Britcon. Got the rules today, read them and impressed so far. Do I need to email you for lists? Sorry if I'm being thick.
