My suggestions would be: Lt Horse - 4s, as they spend a lot of time running away, also they can't run through friends like light foot so they need to be small enough to fit around the edges. Heavy foot - I like to use the larger sized BGs, means I get to ignore most missile fire as it normally doesn...

The situation isn't that hard to engineer now that players are aware of it. If one side can see that a BG is going to break soon and the winners BG overlaps the BG that is getting beaten they can position the lines accordingly. While not easy it is definitely a tactic that can be reused as the attac...

Joint Action Phase - Cav Bouncing

Had a nasty result of a small Lt foot unit routing an elite lancer unit. My cav was just finishing breaking an enemy cav unit, it pursed and hit the extreme end of a HF line, about a ¼ of a base of cav hit the end of the line. There was an enemy Lt foot unit just under 2 inches in front of the HF, i...

I have been fielding my Lt foot as poor if its available. At 2pt for a guy with a javelin they do the same job as Lt foot average/superior costing 3 times the price. Once the heavy troops hit each other the Lt foot usually get stuck in the rear for the rest of the game. The points saved are much bet...

Thanks for the answer, we have been playing like this but I thought we were mistaken as it seems a recipe for disaster to try and give rear support to another BG. Not sure if I am completely comfort with the way routers move under FOG. From my reading of ancient battles it was not unusually to have ...

Rout Path

After the initially rout move in subsequent JAPs it routs towards its own table edge. Does it always have to burst though friendly troops in the way (assuming it isn't light)? Can it move around friends it meets?

If not it seems to be quite danagerous to have any BG anywhere in the rear.

Fought against Syc Ch last week.

I went out of my way to avoid them, as they kept failing their complex move test they couldn't wheel to hit me.

What is with all the junk lights? In all my armies the lights generally just annoy the other sides lights until the main battle lines hit, after that the lights almost never do much else. I would cut down on the lights (or downgrade) and add another fighting unit. I have been trying out poor light f...

Good point about variety. Probably the best photos happened to have hoplites. There are always the Ospreys to look at! Before buying an Osprey for an unusual army I would have liked to see an example of the army. I tend to buy armies on the visual appeal rather than fighting ability, a photo or 2 o...

Some Disappointment with Immortal Fire Pictures

While I have been happy with all the army books and would buy them again I thought some of the pictures in the Immortal Fire book could have been better as they don't match the particular list they are shown with or better example could have been shown. Example: Late Dynastic Egyptian - picture of a...

Arrg, you are right, they should have only dropped 1 level from archery not 2. Oh well another rule I got wrong, I am use to it after trying to learn DBMM and giving up.

The BG took more than 2 hits, from our understanding of the rules that is enough.

Worst BG Performance

In my last game I had a BG that must come close to the worst performance a unit could achieve. It was a BG of Lt Slingers, during my turn it moved up to an archer unit ready to ‘unleash hell’. I rolled first and missed completely, must have lost all their ammo in a marbles competition before the bat...

Its all personal preference, for my money I would keep the elephants as they are a great anchor for your pike flanks. I now only run my pikes in 12s. Spend the min on Lt foot and get cheap Lt foot, its only purpose is to play around for a while in front of your army and annoy the other guy. It never...

I have used a Late Successor 800pt pike army against a Roman army several times now. I found the biggest weakness of a Successor is the immediate flanks of the pikes (which I always mass in the centre). Elephants are surprisingly effective in tying down the loose ends. I now field 2 BGs, one on each...

IC can’t get involved in combat, you have to think of the IC support staff, namely hair stylist, agent, personal trainer and other critical hanger-oners.

On the other hand, an IC cannot influence a BG in close combat unless he is with it. So, the IC's influence declines as BGs engage.
That is why I now play with one IC and 3 TC. Its too dangerous for my IC commander to get involved with actual combat, fighting is for the unknown commanders.
