I find the poor protected undrilled defensive spear in arab armies good value when fighting crusader armies. They sit there as a target for the knights, however on impact the spear are +1 on the knights, add in a general so no rolling of 6s its usually a fun result. With average to slightly bad roll...

Poor troops

I always take poor light foot if available, javmen at 2pts can't be bet. They fight other lights at a +1 POA at impact. Also with the other side spending 5 or 6 pts per light foot it mean you have more to spend on heavier troops. I like protected poor spearmen, fight at 0 or +1 POA against most othe...

NK Egpytian armour on OG15 figures

I have most of the OG15 NYE range and a lot of the figures, including the archers are wearing some sort of armour. Not sure if it chain mail or something else like cotton. Can someone tell me what it is and what colour would be suitable. There is an example of a figure on page 54 of the 'Swifter tha...

Just finished a game against early persians where I fielded 3 BGs of poor protected Hoplites as an ally on one flank. At 5 pts each they are great value, add in a general I think they are under priced. They beat 4 scy Chariots and a BG of 6 armoured horse archers, followed up with helping to kill so...

The list looks good to me, I like the dailami with supporting archers as well, cheap and fill in the lines well. Actually your list is almost a clone of what I now use. I like the poor spear, they are so cheap but don't be afraid to use them in the main line. You can use them in the center of your l...

Not in my book..... Poor slingers are the same cost but have longer shooting range. I prefer the javelin for the +1 POA on impact, they are great for engaging scythe chariots. Also the +1 means they should on average beat average slinger/archers at impact. While LF have their use, namely covering y...

Lights are important but you need to avoid wasting to many points on them. I think the best value at 2pts is the poor Javmen, they do the same job as 5 pt light foot.

An alternative suggestion and one I have found very successful vs a Knight army, field 2 BGs of 12 poor defensive spear/lt archers. They are super cheap and cover 8 base width of frontage. Set the spear up in the center, it forces the opponent to commit troops to cover them, as generally the other s...

Interesting question, but can I further ask... what happens after impact. The cavalry have to conform to the enemy, and thus will be 'in the rough terrain' - correct? Or can they avoid going into disordering terrain? During the melee phase the cav would have to confirm and are moved into the disord...

When is a base deemed to be in difficult terrain?

Recently in a game my lancer cav charged a BG of MF, the MF were located in a field with only about a 1/3 of the end base projecting out of the field. My cav only contacted the bit of the base in the open. The rules say use the terrain of the base claiming the POA. Is it correct that the cav get 2 P...

Cataphracts are more expensive per frontage than superior legionaries, and you are equal at impact. Just focus on remaining steady (general + rear support) to force break of at the end of melee and use the fact that you should be able to overlap to grind them down. If you can manage to stop the cat...

On paper it might look like the Romans are disadvantaged but they always seem to do well on average against a Pike army. Only have to disrupt a pike once and the Romans will eat it up, while the Romans can take forever to destroy. The better lancer cats are relatively easy to counter, use cheaper Lt...

I second the idea of not adding the 3rd rank of LF to the protected spear for a couple of reasons: 1. If you loss a spear base the LF the moves into the 2nd rank doesn't help keep the +pOA for 2 ranks of spearmen. 2. The LH only shoot at impact against mounted and its only one dice per 2 bases, so w...

Keith - what sort of sacrifice to the gods did your commander perform prior to the battle, anything less than goat and you can expect to loss at least one commander. To loss 4 commanders is a strong indication to me that the sacrifice was in the ‘boiler chicken’ range. :D
