thanks for the explaination, I wouldn't have worked that out myself. Maybe next edition of the FAQ they could include that example as reading only the text its hard to understand what the situation is covering.

FAQ - Feeding more bases into an existing melee

Read this in the FAQ - Can a BG in close combat expand into contact with a new enemy BG? Yes but only if either of the following circumstances apply: -The new enemy BG was already fighting it as an overlap -The contact does not result in the previously unengaged enemy BG entering close combat (the t...

I don't think you get value for money with 4 TC for an army of only 12 BGs. Better to drop one TC and upgrade to a IC, the 12MU range with the +1 cohesion bonus is well worth it against any sort of shooty army.

If faced with a shooting enemy the Spartian really don't have a lot of options, one is to dig in around their camp. Boring and will result in a draw once the game time runs out. The IC + armoured + superior means the hoplites will very rarely fail a test. Realistic in a way. Option B - set up the Ho...

In an open tournament the IC is a good buy. That extra pip on cohesion test means archery based armies are almost junk against superior armoured hoplites.

How to count pike ranks for POAs

Had this arise in a game yesterday. AAAA AAAA BBBB BBBB RRRR RRRR 'A' and 'B' are 2 pike BGs each 2 ranks deep lined up behind each other. 'R' is the enemy Romans. The player claimed that the POA for pike ranks doesn't state that the 3rd and 4th rank have to belong to the same BG. In the above case ...

I am in the exact same process of getting ready an army for an open competition. Going with Late Jewish with a Roman allied force. The rome are so expensive that they use up half the 800pts by themselves. The jewish troops are a mix of Off spear and lots of lights. The Romans will make short work of...

Actually I think it is completely illegal. The chariot without an enemy to the front would have to wheel within 1 MU to contact the side of the spear unit. So it wouldn't be a legal flank charge. As its not a legal flank charge and the spear are engaged to their front you would not be allowed to con...

If it wasn't a legal flank charge you wouldn't be able to even move into contact with the pike as the pike are already engaged to their front. All you could legally do in this case is join an overlap.

I second the toughness of legionaires vs pike. I took a Pontic army up against a legionaire heavy late Rep army a few days ago. Had 3 pike and 2 spearmen BG broken in one turn and in most of these combats I had overlaps on the Romans.

Able to flank charge or not

had the following come up in a game yesterday. 'A' is my cav BG of 4 bases in melee with '1' also a cav unit of 4 bases. To the side is a BG of legionaries (2). Can the legionaires declare a charge on 'A' by advancing and wheeling? I believe it doesn't count as a true flank charge. Can someone confi...

What you described about moving a LF behind your cav has happened exactly to me...twice. Last time a couple of weeks ago.

Not a particularly nice way to loss a cav unit.

It would be nice if the Napoleonic army books went more along the lines of Flames of War stype than FOG.

What I mean is to go into much more detail, maybe a single army book per nation with very detailed painting guides and information on the types of figures to put into a unit.

1 base to a company will be fairly low level. You could do Hougomont, but not Waterloo.
Unless the rules allow you to fight Waterloo on a large table they wont crack the big time. I would recommend something along the lines of Napoleon Battle rules.
