I think it's hard to beat Roman Legionaries with most other infantry. I think the only infantry that can stand against them are other Legionaries! Whenever I've faced them, I avoid them like the plague and go for the supports, and only engage the Legions once I can get into the flanks. I've never pl...

So a BG of 4 mounted in line, turns 90 to column, moves, then turns back 90 to face in line, but now in a 3 by 1 formation... well, technically correct, but ridiculous... and not something I'd want to enforce on an opponent. And if it turns 90 degrees again it's 2 wide and 2 deep! So if a BG of cav...

Got that, thanks. Just curious as to what the more popular unit size might be, and whether three, or four, to a base. Thanks! I'd personally go sixes for the XBows, and eights for the LSp/Bow. Also, as I'm a miser and am now free of the pesky Reg/Irreg distinction of four or three figures to a base...

Well, I'm alright Jack, sortof! I happen to have all the dismounted cavaly options for DBM for my Han (as Ax(S)) so there's 16 bases of medium foot, plus I went for the Aux(X) option for my Spring and Autumns (Eastern Zhou) so they're all medium foot - hurrah! Only big rebasing projects are for the ...

Early T'ang infantry are 6-8 bases IIRC, with a minimum of 12 bases in the army. Only a single unit of foot crossbows is allowed, of 6-8 bases.

And then there's Early Slavic - I find myself morbidly fascinated by this list. Has anyone taken it to a tournament yet? If so I think that firstly they should be congratulated for having such big cojones, and secondly some sort of collection should be organised for them.... Your on, after I have f...

I think that the mixed battle groups are (funnily enough) a mixed blessing. True you get some missile fire from your BG, but at reduced effect compared to 'pure' missile units. However, once base losses occur the fact the missile troops have to fight will probably accelerate your demise compared wit...

Wolves would be Generals, 48 undrilled av prot def sp, 2 x 6 LF Bw, ...? That's a very unfair statement about the wonderful variety in the Wolves from the Sea book. There are at least two variants: Gobfulls of HF/Ave/Undr/Prot/OSp with a side order of Cv/Sup/Undr/Arm/LSp/Sw Gobfulls of HF/Ave/Undr/...

I don't think HW troops are that useful against mounted. In the open they're one down at impact against most mounted (even the LSpear types), and at best evens in the melee (most mtd have sword). If they stay steady then the mounted get to break off and charge in again at advantage in their next tur...

Re: Astronaut's Breakfast

I'm not sure how to use the 'anti-cavalry' squads. I think that they're anything but anti-cavalry, but may be useful in taking on enemy heavy foot, in which case 4s are probably too small for a heavy foot slogging match. The 8 you can get in the Early Tang are also too few in this role, perhaps the...

It's complicated by the pesky (though entirely justified) changes in cavalry armament, from crossbow to bow, and the fact that there is a change of infantry characterisation in the Northern Wei - early Song. Also numbers of infantry available at different times. However, I think if you start with 16...

Re: Astronaut's Breakfast

Delighted to receive my new Empire of the Dragon book, I seek input on the following Early Tang list: I toyed with changing some of the mixed infantry to bring in some anti-cavalry squads. What do people think of Average HW in 4s? One BG of 8 seems too much, but Average infantry in 4s seems too bri...

This is true and fair enough, it's just unfortunate that the crossbow has been severely nerfed under FoG. I have come back around on crossbows, against cavalry they are fine. Yeah I've found that they're very useful against mounted, but except vs heavily armoured knights and Cats they are no better...

By their nature army lists enforce artificial break points and these are often arbitrary. This avoids over flexibility Unless you are Roman....... The accounts we have from this period are clear that the crossbow was the missile weapon and that is what is reflected in the list This is true and fair...

Well, I received my copy today and I'm very happy with the Chinese armies - armoured/protected medium foot with heavy weapons backed by armoured/protected Xbows or bows is better than what I was expecting, and now I'm really looking forward to trying out the official lists.
