I too enjoyed his novel

GJ's novel, "Aztec", is pretty fun. I really did enjoy it and it makes for some decent historical fiction. Just remember, this particular novel is heavy on the fiction. His descriptions of the city banners and markets is supported by Juan Bernal Castillo's accounts as well, so I would believe them (...

spear v bow

Well is the Knight interaction with Protected Def Spear balanced? Is the reason their was so much protected defensive spear is, that is the best they could manage historically or was it actually a bit more robust than the game currently portrays. I am migrating to the armour is both a harder thing ...

a wishlist, not a real answer

Well, for me, I like the ancients FOG as it stands. Yes, there are some problems, like the Romans v. Hannibal's Carthaginians, but it stands really solid as a game. I really don't think that my own opinion will warrant much, but my next biggest desire would be a fantasy set of rules (not sci-fi). Ye...

don't forget the terrain!

When I was using my thracians as offensive spear, I would frequently put them in terrain. If I recall, Med Foot will not charge out of terrain if you don't want them to, so the entire impetuous would be moot.

Then again, I am frequently wrong with the rules, at the worst times... :(

strange...

This is strange to me... One of the abilities of the Romans (at least in FoG) is to be skilled swordsmen. So, another way to represent the inferior abilities of imitation legions is to make them swordsmen instead. The Romans will be Superior (and Elite) skilled swordsmen compared to imitation's Aver...

Liking the unprot/sup/bow sword/drilled cav in the mongols, with a smaller amount of light horse since they can skirmish quite well, pass cmt's to get into a single rank easily, evade and shoot well... aswell as being able to cause a lot more damage on a flank charge so cannot be ignored. Also, why...

firearms are evil!

As for my Ottomans, I always use my Janissaries in BG's of 8 and then support them with a BG of LF with Firearms. That usually deters Knights from charging them. Regards Martin How. LF firearms deter knights? Surely they would make the knights more likely to charge. Well, the worst offenders are po...

my take on it...

With regard to the Ottomans some people regard the Janissaries as the best troops and want to use all 16 bases. Taking the bow in bases of 6 means they will take tests after receiving 2 hits from shooting, in bases of 8 they require receiving 3 hits from shooting to force a test. Also a 6 base BG w...

my own personal experience

This is just my own personal, anecdotal experience, so please take this with a grain of salt. My Macedonians/ Early Successors frequently encounter some flavor of Romans (in all their incarnations). I can honestly say that my pike blocks frequently loose to legions. These sort of battles frequently ...

to clarify the order of events

Just to clarify, because I had something like this happen last week... Here is the sequence of events in order: 1) you move your troop into contact with the baggage camp. 2) complete movement, shooting and melee as normal. 3) in the joint action phase, you make a CMT for the BG in contact with the e...

Re: Sort of off tangent question

This is just a thought experiment, because my previous understanding would have been that you loose any and all half dice. In other words, the LBs get 4 dice and the Bows get only 4 dice as well. Even if they had the same type of weapon, they would still only get 4 dice each. There is no such thing...

I've bought the Litko tokens

I have the Litko tokens and I have mixed feelings about them. The biggest problem is the colors: Disrupted; yellowish-green Fragmented; golden Broken; Black Disordered; orange Severely Disordered; red So, this isn't too bad until you have multiple and different status tokens that get scattered on th...

Sort of off tangent question

So, this is slightly off task, but it does relate to the discussion. So, say that there is 2 BGs of Medium foot archers (6 each). These BGs are grouped up in 2 ranks of 3 stands each. The first BG has Long Bows (LB), the second, only Bows (B). Assuming that all 12 stands are in short range of the sa...

Is that really wise? I admit to frequently being wrong, so please, if anyone knows better, please correct me! However, this is a fairly straight forward math puzzle (assuming my PoAs are correct): Let us start with Impact: Assuming that you are even for the front rank, you will get 4 dice, on averag...

Bedouin LH?

Well, I play Macedonians (with their Prodromoi LH Lancers) and Later Crusaders (with Bedouin allies, so 4 groups of LH lancers). I rarely win, so I'm not the best person to give advice, but I will give what knowledge I have learned. Light Horse almost always loose half their dice. Even though Lances...

Personally, I would have preferred more detail fo...

Yeah! I've wanted to do a tribe for each major region for my 5th grade class!

I'm working on the Aztecs. I'll certainly pick up your mound builders soon. Next will be Tlingit, your Iroquois, Hopi, and finally some Californian tribe (I haven't seen many selections, yet.
