Re: Southern League 2014

Bob,
second could be mounted only armies in which we could exclude those with pistol impact and pistol melee
This is roughly what we did at Clevedon last year and we will be doing again next year. We also excluded any pike and musket foot.

Details will be released at the weekend.

Re: Southern League - Milton Keynes Round 1st December

Actually same logic as most one day events, I have the army and its pretty and I haven't used it enough, see you sunday Alasdair While I suspect an element of truth, it is probably the best counter to massed mounted pistols and so a very good choice. Beginning to think I should have had the courage...

Re: 1700 to 1762

Guys, This is a period of linear tactics, when units formed into two or three mutually supporting lines. It is not a period of manoeuvre, except for Frederick the Great. Please remember there is no conscription and so armies are made up of professional soldiers, who where tightly controlled by NCOs....

Re: Army balance in competitions

+1 on the death roll was to mitigate the long range art sniping (it was on a slightly different thread after all). Who hasn't lost a 23 pt DH to a single artillery shot in the first bound! Definatley battle troops only. Dragoons are too good as it is! How about a different death roll for artillery ...

Have to agree and probably the easiest to try out.

Re: Army balance in competitions

Simon, I can't comment on eastern european/asian mounted armies as they in next years CAPEX budget, but I would imagine they would be similar, but they have the advantage of having bow, so, they can shoot and so are not as dependant on artillery. The problem with all of these is that they cannot mat...

Re: Army balance in competitions

Guys, I am not sure any of these suggestions would put me off fielding a cavalry heavy force. Starting closer together, just brings artillery into range of more troops. Reducing the score to hit cavalry from 4 to 5, I see as an encouragement to use more cavalry. I still think the problem lies with f...

Re: Army balance in competitions

Guys, I am not convinced that limiting artillery is going to solve the problem. On Saturday my two batteries of medium artillery couldn't hit a barn door and it didn't stop me ending up on 48 points and in first place. I would also point out that my infantry was involved in both games and it was the...

Re: Army balance in competitions

Martin, I whole heartily agree with you. I have struggled with my various irregular armies for sometime now, but decided I would fight fire with fire for Warfare. I am more than happy to play with more balanced armies if the competitions force this, but if you want to challenge for places, them you ...

Re: Themed or specific date?

I also fully agree with Don. I think it is the constant variation that stops FoGR becoming stayed and uninteresting. My only problem is not having the variety of armies to compete in all the competitions. I am not sure I have got my head around Usk as yet, but I always look forward to the weekend. Don

Re: 1700 to 1762

Which is interesting as I was never entirely happy that we ran FoG:R beyond the end of the TYW/Frenc-Spanish War period (call it 1660 for round numbers). Nik, Ignoring the point that few people are ever "entirely happy" unless they have "no expectations", what specifically were the reasons for your...

Re: The wholly unofficial points revision sticky …

Nik,

Just on another point, are you proposing to do anything about the points cost of Dragoons?

Seem exceptional value for the ability to match for three moves and fall back in front of the enemy.

Re: The wholly unofficial points revision sticky …

Nik, I would like to see a major reduction in points for cavalry, yes they suffer to pike & shot armies as do other mounted, but they also take a -1 when shot at my firearms. Against other mounted they cost similar points and don't stand any chance on average dice. Heavily armoured superior horse, p...

Southern League 2014

Just a quick heads up, I am looking at Sunday 23rd March 2014 for the Clevedon round of the League.

More details as soon as next years competition is decided.
