not what us future Selucids wanted to hear.....
I was hoping the pikes would get an advantage over the Romans and prove a more formidable foe than the ancient Spanish have proven to be so far.

I would say that if a commander is with a routing unit and its in contact with pursuers or within 6MU of enemy even, he would recognize a lost cause and decide to use his talents elswhere on the battlefield. A live general is much more useful than a dead or fleeing one after all. I am sure there was...

I assumed that since they evaded I had to roll vmd regardless, well that certainly changes things.
Thanks for pointing that out. :D

+ pike + 4th rank ( if still alive ) vs +1 SSW and + 1 armour makes it even . Ok the romans will have in that case more dice , but it is still even . And if the roman loose the shock, they are more in trouble beacause they will loose the SSW + and fight at a serrious disadvantage . [/quote] Check y...

the LH have swords so that gives them an advantage, I have found bows effective at getting rid of lights since they are almost impossible to charge and contact let alone hold them down until something else can help to eliminate them. Lights are the greatest pain in the butt in the rule system, or so...

stepping forward

this happend in a game this weekend, My roman heavies charged a unit of lights screening a unit of spanish heavies. The lights evaded but my lousy die roll of 2 left me 1 MU short of the spanish heavies. I brought my elephants up ready to charge into the spanish overlap on my next turn, they are now...

charging through lights

Somehting that came up in a recent game, Spanish versus Romans. My Romans were about 1 MU or less away from a unit of spanish lights who had Spanish heavies directly behind them, may have been touching or were just short of the lights can't recall. During the Spanish turn he wanted to charge through...

having played both sides with large spanish undrilled mobs the sudden mobility of the new spanish drilled 4 paks came as a real surprise. Not sure I like the average legionaries who cant deal out the damage or stand up to what the superior troops can. Learned a lot from this game that I took into th...

light horse break offs

one other question that came up in our last game my light horse charged into a unit of medium foot, at the end of the turn during the joint action phase I broke off from the spanish since we assumed that the term cav would refer to any mounted that are not shock troops and the light horse took the w...

Hammy your edit got it right. I was wondering if the Romans should not have continued into the spanish mediums even though their target was the heavies and the mediums were slightly behind the heavy line but I still had the extra moves to close the gap and hit the mediums. Alas my poor ctaphracts sh...

why not grab some of those cretan archers? the bows are pretty good at pounding targets at a long range and being lights they can bugger off if someone comes after them. Also the superior means you get to re-roll 1's

charge pic didnt work out

picture didnt quite work out right, there was a spanish 4 pak in colum beside a 4 pak in line which was fighting the cats. beside them was a 10 pak of heavies who the romans chaged with an 8 pak of heavy foot. i thought i would hit both the heavies and the mediums with my legions who should have end...

charges

Recently ran into a situation where my unit of cataphracts contacted Spanish foot unit, unfortunately I misjudged the distance and my Roman heavies could not charge on the same turn. the Spanish had 2 units side by side and the one unit in front of the Romans had moved just slightly ahead of the uni...

Bows LF versus MF

Wanting to build a successor pike army and I have the option of bows being LF or MF. So far my bows have always been LF so I am used to having them run away if someone comes and threatens them. MF wont be able to do that and I am not sure they really wan to stand up to those nasty Romans. I know you...

Just a thought, keep the elephants to the outside of the pike blocks, that way if any sneaky cav manages to try and flank you they lose dice for being disordered. This weekend routed Roman Gaul 6X cav superior armoured in 2 games, and the elephants were left without a scratch. I am guessing pike arm...

I can feel for your Gauls since my Spaniards have suffered the same fate many times over. Nice AAR good pics. Now if only you had a hill to stand on, the Romans would be +/_ which helps you a bit. I would suggest having your general double march your lights forward to slow the Romans and then he can...

If you go for the IC why not bring along the 8 Roman HF allowed? Its a cost thing, but I agree they would be worth it since they are going to fight the legions on an even footing. Would the slingers be better deployed opposite the Roman cav? Better chance of hitting - and if they're within 6 MU of t...
