Re: Points Needing Update/Clarification???
As far as the support thing for squares is concerned, this is what we used in the recent tournament in Melbourne....I'm pretty sure this is correct. Flank and Rear Support for Squares Shooting - Squares can both give and receive support shooting. Combat - Squares can give rear support if they are wi...

Re: Source for comparison of Generals?
Been thinking about this a bit recently, and the number of command points a general has is really a quite abstract way of representing his skill level. Realistically, it would represent a combination of skill, situational awareness (from efficient and accurate reports), and the effectiveness of the ...

Re: British Competition Forum
My background is Napoleonics, along with some Napoleonics and a little bit of Napoleonics as well. (And maybe a bit of Warhammer, bit we won't mention that too loudly  .......) Over the past year or so I have slowly been beginning to delve into the AM and R periods, as both seem to be pretty w...

Yeah, that's what I thought.
Just wanted to check there wasn't some kind of qualification because it is an attachment.

Re: Rear support -effect
I cannot see in the rules where there is a limit to + or - dice - happy if you could point me in the relight direction You are correct in that the rules are not as explicit as they could be. See here for confirmation from Terry: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=188&t=49662&p=467948&h...

Artillery shooting over a crest
Here is the situation: A unit is defending 2MU behind the crest of a hill. The enemy have a reformed infantry unit with an artillery attachment and an artillery unit within 6MU on the other side of the crest. The enemy artillery cannot shoot - they have to be within 2MU of the crest to shoot over it...

Re: defender routing ( village )
But as they will have declared an assault in their active player's turn they will be able, other things being equal, to enter in their movement phase without the non active player being able to do much about it I have a vague recollection of this being discussed once before, but can't remember if i...

Re: Rear support -effect
Not quite..... No unit will ever get more than a "+" or "-" one die as a result of rear support, regardless of the number of units involved. In your example, X and Y each get +1 for rear support, while A gets -1. To turn it around, if A had rear support, and X and Y did not, A would be +1 and X and ...

Re: Skirmisher
Being in skirmish formation brings its own penalties and benefits - more manoeuvrable and harder to hit, but vulnerable in close combat especially against cavalry as they can't form square. Light infantry shoot better than line at medium range - 5 dice rather than 3. Having these units act as skirmi...

Re: July 2014 FOG N tournament Melbourne
The terrain for each scenario was set, and there were no additions. Each map is a slightly stylised representation of the actual battlefield, with adjustments made to enable a good game. For the one in N. Italy (is that Durnstein? The one with the three vineyards anyway) the actual battlefield was n...

Re: Filling metal castings
I had reasonable success with the GW "green stuff", it cures to a smoother finish than the milliput though it can be a little difficult to get the consistency right for workability. Plus it can be cut with a knife once it has cured, so slightly over-fill then pare it down once it has set.

I'm in!!!
Will the format be scenarios and pre-set terrain, or the basic "back of the book" meeting engagement?
Will the players need to provide any terrain?

Re: Source for comparison of Generals?
Just saw this myself! The other possibility is to look at the Empire rules system - way too detailed as rules (don't think I ever played a game to any real conclusion  ) - but they do have a pretty comprehensive list of corps and army commanders, rated on five levels for skill and four levels ...

Yeah, they burst through the long-range target and dropped them a cohesion level anyway (I think).
Thanks Brett.
P.S. - I'm now a tank-busting Stuka....cool!!
A bit of a step up from an immobile lump of concrete.

Shooting at Broken Troops
Had a game yesterday where this situation came up: My light cavalry charged a wavering infantry unit which failed its test and so broke. The angle of the charge was such that the infantry had to flee into the path of my unit of heavy guns at medium range - not so good for them!! There was another en...

Re: Defensive fire when in contact
This situation came up in the tournament last month, the first time I had come across it, and the situation was as follows: My large infantry unit was charged by a small cavalry unit, and so formed square. The charge came in on an angle so that only one end base of the infantry unit was contacted, e...

Re: Point a New Player the Right Way?
Think of it this way: - all infantry units have 4 or 6 bases (small or large unit). - all infantry are either line or light. The main difference is that light infantry shoot better (more shots) at medium range, and have the ability to go into skirmish formation . This makes the unit harder to hit in...

Re: Definition of 'Mercenary' Men at Arms
Ok, just looked at the list again, and realised that the question is moot - there is a max of 12 bases, which can be any of three different troop types.
So actually no need to use the upgrade option.

Makes you think just how unlucky the Light Brigade were at Balaclava.
First the Russians roll 4+ to defend the guns, then manage to get all those hits as the British charged in!
I suppose the British cav must have been superior, otherwise they never would have closed

Re: Point a New Player the Right Way?
Hi Marty, first of all I would just like to welcome a new player - always a good thing :) . Second, all the above advice is excellent and to the point. My main suggestion would be to try to find a group of players or a club nearby to where you live who use the rules, and go along for a few introduct...
