Re: 'Tanks, more tanks, Tovarish!' - Red Star Review and Discuss

The PzIIIL (long 50mm gun) is the best tank the Germans can field in 1941 No, it is the PzIII J. Ausf. L is available in June 1942. There's no such thing as a PzIII J Ausf. L in OOB..:) Nor anywhere else. Your point? Hmm..., maybe the following helps: :) The period (.) is placed at the end of decla...

The PzIIIL (long 50mm gun) is the best tank the Germans can field in 1941 No, it is the PzIII J. Ausf. L is available in June 1942. Of course the designer can put whatever he wants in a scen (Rostov and Moscow have J/1s which also cannot be bought by the player in 1941). Heh, the image Spike posted...

Re: 'Tanks, more tanks, Tovarish!' - Red Star Review and Discuss

Spike, good answer but Cool, I think it's moot. The Unreliable trait renders a tank useless in this game, IMO, because it takes away a key attribute: mobility. As you said before, the KV-1 is good as a pillbox and only if it's located at an important tactical spot on the map. I lost one scenario ch...

So the moral is that crawling around slowly doesn't seem to reduce the amount of eff loss a unit gets hit with, unless a dev can come in here to tell us otherwise.
Okay, thanks for the info. :)

Re: 'Tanks, more tanks, Tovarish!' - Red Star Review and Discuss

If you minimize the moves, you probably won't even notice it is unreliable. But if you don't pay attention, you're in a world of hurt. I wouldn't buy any of such vehicles, but you get one for free and it was actually very good because I used it as a pillbox mostly. I've run tests and there's a rando...

1- It's best to let our Aux forces get slaughtered rather than our Core units, right? 2- Unspent resource points carry over to the next battle, right? Anything else I might need to know for when I have to hold jerry at the gates of Moscow? 1. Yes. But especially in Red Star it is also worth it to r...

Re: 'Tanks, more tanks, Tovarish!' - Red Star Review and Discuss

I finished Red Star and here are some notes from the last missions: 11. Yelnya, first planned Soviet offensive of the war near Smolensk The safest way to play this is to do the same as Spike did (see his earlier post) i.e. use you superior numbers to crush the enemy frontally. What I did was a large...

My field trip in Russia and surroundings has also continued: 8. Viipuri 1940, concludes the Winter War Your biggest enemy may be the poor movement of all other units but tanks, so consider this when deploying units. Most of my army plowed through in the middle with smaller detachments to guard the f...

Re: 'Tanks, more tanks, Tovarish!' - Red Star Review and Discuss

Wow, you are The Man! :D I'm not sure I could've won with what you had. Luckily BT-7s are cheap to repair which should help a bit. And I do love their speed. Not that it matters, but the enemy has only two bombers (maybe you were distracted by the Me-110). Not deploying any air but only perhaps AA o...

I must have misunderstood mate, Bru said- "..the specialisations offered in a campaign are set by the designer", so that looks like being at the mercy of the designer to me..:)
Isn't everything in the game set by the designer? So why single out one feature?

Comrade Stalin will undoubtedly rely on his tested battle commanders and treat them with the respect they deserve while the Wehrmacht is occupied with England. Time to relax.

Re: Increase the pool of the specialisations available

Good thinking mate, as being "locked into" campaigns is one reason I don't like them much because we're often straitjacketed and at the mercy of the campaign structure..;) This of course is not true at all and is getting old, Spike. :? The only "mercy" is that you have a set order to play the scena...

Re: Forced Labor?

Besides the specs that give more CP, the Drop Tank and Forced Labour specs are the only useful ones IMO. The Brit tanks aren't worth the money and the Guards Infantry, although a nice idea, useless too, as the Marines have way better stats. Imo Scrambling is ok considering what is available. Was al...

Crap. Upgrading four heavy infantry units (it is a defensive battle), purchasing two MIG-3 fighters, upgrading one(!) BT-7 tank to a KV-1, and some other repairs have wiped out my meager resource points bank account. This is not going to be good. :( Reading the above and considering what I had at t...

So Viipuri remains the only one of Red Stars 13 scenarios that I haven't managed to win despite playing it twice, and my nanny is furious with me! Well, it is the Finns you are facing, so I'm sure nanny understands. However, once the Finnish armored attack was broken, Irl this massive armoured attack consisted of five (5) Vickers tanks. Indeed, I am looking to upgrade them for Barbarossa? I hope so. Easier yes, but it seems that I just suck with defensive scenarios. I'm still unable to sit back and do nothing. There's always the urge to attack and kill something... My thoughts exactly. 8) And the German airforce's incredibly strong. Like the early US planes vs. Jap. Zeros. I don't li...
