Re: V2 Turks

Hi Marty That's a question we'll need an answer for when the time comes to nail down v2 lists. My initial thoughts are the Turks didn't actually have very many artillery tubes, on a guns-per-thousand-men basis. Will have to do the research on this. But if it turns out to be the case, I would imagine...

Re: NICon 2017

I actually think that wavering being -1AVC makes the game last longer, not shortens it. 30:10 results are what makes for very fast games - and there were few of these in the tournament. Due, I think, not only to evenly matched opponents, but also because you have to do extraordinarily well to keep y...

Re: NICon 2017

The rounds were 3.5 hours. Only 3 games (from 24) were timed out draws. Most rounds saw 1 or 2 games finish in 2-3 hours, with the rest finishing 3-3.5 hours. In my view this ideal n a tournament format. If a club game was desired to last 4-5 hours, I think playing 1,000 points would be the way to go.

Re: NICon 2017

Well Nicon 2017 done. Big ups to those who made the effort to travel from Australia for the tournie. Great to see you guys here. Well done to Lord Goldsbury, winner, NZ champion and holder of Sharpe's Eagle for the 2nd year running. Results: 1st Kit (85 points) Anglo-Netherlands army in Belgium 1815...

Being consistent with the Anglo-allied 1815 list would be good.

Daemionhunter wrote:Does this also mean artillery can't deploy? That would appear a bit odd. Certainly I can understand the restriction balancing the benefits for other troops but not artillery.
Under the current version limbered artillery would have wait until turn 2 to limber.

Re: Frontal Assault going backwards

An oversight!
While a frontal assault can elect not to move units forward at full speed- or may even stand still, going backwards seems against the spirit of an assault.

Unless anyone has an good argument against, I'll amend the final version to prevent any 'full frontal retreating' in the 1st turn.

Re: V2 Turks

I'm more troubled by the Sipahis becoming irregular heavies. I can see the reasoning. They were probably irregulars but in reality probably light. If you rate them that way though they all become skirmishers which is not useful in large numbers and perhaps not right. You make good points Marty. The...

Re: V2 Turks

You can take away the lance because it fits the game but it's not historical . I dislike changing the reality to fit the game Not saying the turks didn't mostly have lances, you are correct, they did. But were they an effective weapon such that turks should get +2 dice against infantry? See the thr...

Re: V2 Turks

I think researching the Russian and Austrian clashes with the turks would give a better answer too. Napoleon's Egyptian campaign did not feature large numbers of European heavy cavalry. Mikhailovsky-Danilevsky's 2 volume "Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12" is about as in depth contemporary read on this ...

Re: V2 Turks

Sipahis on most Turkish lists are generally rated as regular conscript LC with lance, impetuous. I'm proposing to change this to irregular HC, impetuous. Reasoning: They were feudal units, raised on demand and dismissed thereafter. It seems to me that they should not be equated with western regular ...

v2 lists - Lances

v2 lancers have been left essentially the same as v1 - ie they get 2 additional dice in combat against enemy infantry. While I'm not convinced this is the best portrayal of the benefits or disadvantages of being equipped with a lance, that's not the purpose of this post. What I'm proposing is a gene...

V2 Turks

Starting to turn my mind to v2 lists, in this case the Ottoman Turks. I believe that Janissaries should be reclassified from v1 regular drilled or conscripts, to irregulars. Background Ottoman armies consisted of paid, permanently embodied units (Kapikulu - basically Janissaries, artillery, Househol...

DO Exceptional commander rereoll 1 rally test Not in v2. The points for L3 DCs has dropped to 50 though. blocking deployment options, you roll three dice if you have exceptional and your roll three 1's you only get to p=block one deployment option. Correct. Although note that blocking particular op...

Re: FOG N 2nd Edition - it's back!

I watched Kit take a prepared defence and beat Philips Frontal assault at the club today. The main advantage of position defence is the free large Hill. It's the only strategy that gives you a free Hill. Downsides are, as you say, having to deploy first. But this is mitigated in part by hidden deplo...

Re: FoGN v2 Firing out of Buildings

Only firing at close range dramatically reduces the building's zone of cotrol to a point where it is easy to ignore the enemy in it This is important to my mind. While the defenders may not cause much in the way of cohesion loss at 6MU, they do have a zone of annoyance with a reasonable chance of d...
