Re: V2 Deployment system

Surprised to hear Probe is favoured. It would leave many armies with 1 division on table at the start. I know - it seems like a weird one to become a favourite. The attraction of Probe is that you always get to out-deploy your opponent. You can see their entire army before deciding where to place y...

Re: V2 Deployment system

As the primary villain behind the 'Scenarios' deployment system, it might be a useful if I mention something about the philosophy behind it. The Start point was general dissatisfaction with the existing set-up, which for experienced players has become a little stale, and in some players view biased ...

Re: V2 Deployment system

I was disappointed to see the original attack/defend system had been pretty much kept in its entirety for the "standard" game. Agreed the existing v1 setup has become a little stale. We've left it as an option for now but this is mainly to provide an alternative for any players who don't like the s...

Re: FOG N v2 Proof reading and testing

p28 Arc of fire: When does a large artillery unit fire as a small one? Now that it has a fire arc 2 bases out the side it can't be reduced to a small unit when a target is in front of one of its bases. Nice question. The 2 base arc only applies at long range and we have been playing that large or s...

Good point. I agree as well. Let's chalk in a speed boost for LI extended lines in terrain.

Re: FOG N v2 Proof reading and testing

Firstly, great list. Thanks for taking the time to do this Pugs. Page 9 = infantry division mention 3 units , but should 3 units 1 infantry and 2 artillery be considered a valid division? This is intentional. It should help make list building easier and essentually would represent a collection of co...

Re: FOG N 2nd Edition - it's back!

To my mind the huge advantage that large infantry units have is the ability to keep their cohesion at medium range. Some stats to back this. The chances of a small/large unit dropping a cohesion level to incoming fire are: Facing 2 dice: 11%/0% Facing 3 dice: 24%/4% Facing 4 dice : 41%/11% Facing 5 ...

Re: FOG N 2nd Edition - it's back!

fwiw the ability to stop a unit being driven back to 3mu by having rear support hard behind is in v1, without any issues I am aware of.
Never felt it to be gamey or cheesy in the least. Simply good use of infantry rear support.

Re: Anglo-Netherlands Army 1815 - army building questions

Rather than a single list trying to cover everything,I think this list can happily be divided into 4 separate lists. Each list would have a core nationality based around a core of one of the following troops types (with the CC being that of that Nationality). Each list would have the ability to ally...

Re: V2 Army Lists

On the subject of conscripts how are you guys treating conscripts getting two dice for CT's when rear supported? I think it would be a simplification/improvement if this applied to all CT's even if the unit was supporting itself by been in a deep formation.Martin We tossed this idea around as it wo...

Re: V2 Army Lists

Strangely in FOG N the morale of a superior conscript is ie lower than average drilled because 2 dice is always better than one with a re-roll. It should be remembered that a CT is a test to maintain or recover unit Cohesion. It's not unreasonable that the ability to pass a CT should in many cases ...

Re: V2 Army Lists

It is a bit odd that in the current lists grenz are average or poor and they suddenly shift to superior. Maybe Mike hadn't read Gill's 3 volumes on the 1809 campaign when he did the v1 lists? v1 also has a definition for Elan (ie superior, average or poor) that created fuzzy thinking. v1 Elan descr...

Re: V2 Army Lists

Just on the Grenz thing,

Superior Conscript Grenz will be 11 points a base (9 for conscript LI, +2 for being Superior).
Average Drilled Grenz will be 14 points a base.

Current thinking (well mine anyway) is to generally allow both options across the range of Austrian lists.

Re: V2 Army Lists

Basis for the Grenz thinking: 1. They were Permanently organised into regiments, although of a militia variety. 2. Along with the Hungarian Grenadiers, their French enemies rated them highly. 3. They fought formed up as often as they fought in skirmish formation. 4. They seem to feature at the sharp...

Re: FOG N 2nd Edition - it's back!

not having to pull back out of 2mu means that getting hit for 3 is no more upsetting than getting hit for 2. At close range I would think this would be a real morale problem if you couldn't get out of close range. You're not wrong. However most would say that Unreformed could use a little help to b...

Re: FOG N 2nd Edition - it's back!

In the latest v2 draft, 1809 Austrians are actually remaining as normal plodding unreformed. The date for zippy Austrians is 1813+.
And as you suggest, 1813+ Austrians are currently 8 points (Average Drilled). It's the slow 1809 chaps who have dropped to 7 (average drilled).

Re: FOG N 2nd Edition - it's back!

Only one thing we didn't like. The new 'Retire to 3MU' rule. It seems a bit gamy to be able to put units right up behind so that, even though you have copped 3 hits, you can still shoot back at close range. Hi Geoff. This rule is essentially the same rule as written as in v1. A 'retire to 3MU' in v...

Yup, Charles was ok, except he's not a corps commander, so I wasn't considering him as a FoGN CC.
