Re: More Mixed Battlegroup Shenanigans

I think we were both stating the obvious in the last couple of posts, Pete. Of course, Scandinavian MF in the open suffer a combat penalty against mounted in the open and count as swordsmen in melee. What seems to be have been decided is that they count as HF in all circumstances, except when moving...

Re: More Mixed Battlegroup Shenanigans

.So if the Scandinavians had say 3 HF and 1 MF base in the front rank and were charged by enemy mounted, 1 of the mounted bases would get an additional POA vs the MF - assuming they are in the open So, presumably, this would apply to melee as well with, in the case of Scandinavians, opponents facin...

Re: More Mixed Battlegroup Shenanigans

Other BGs of mixed MF/HF (including Scandinavians) do NOT get this bonus.
Does this mean Scandinavian mixed HF/MF get a minus for fighting HF in the open if they lose a HF front rank base and the gap is filled with a MF base? If so, is this effect immediate (as with 25% losses)?

Re: More Mixed Battlegroup Shenanigans

Some Book 3 lists, such as Late Plantagenet English, state mixed HF/Longbows count as HF for all purposes (movement, combat, cohesion tests). This actually contradicts the terrain disorder effect rules on page 130, which state only the bases in the terrain are affected, so rear rank MF really should...

Re: Mixed battle Groups

That provision is also inconsistent with the retained freedom (from V2.0) of BGs wholly of dismounted men at arms or longbows to move through each other WITHOUT A CMT  . One would have thought the reverse ought to apply :? Easier within a single BG than between separate ones. To be consisten...

To quote one well respected veteran wargamer, when I asked why he no longer contributed to this forum: "Too many closed minds in a small group = a waste of energy."

Re: Britcon 2019 - Proposed Theme & Timetable

The competition has run, under various rule sets, for twenty years as a benevolent dictatorship and that seems to produce good competitions I'm not sure there's anything benevolent (that is, good) in the catastrophic fall in the FOG player base, Graham. I am sure there can be a myriad of possible e...

Re: Britcon 2019 - Proposed Theme & Timetable

Really need to break down the options into separate bullets.
We should be voting on such things as the period and the number of games, etc, not on a 'broadly speaking' distillation of thoughts from a relatively small sample of the player base.

Pursuers in contact to side...

Here's a photo of a situation from a club game which I'd like some help with: http://www.ctp-photo.co.uk/Pictures/FOG-01.jpg The pike block on the right (pale green shields) broke its frontal opponents and was left in side edge contact with an enemy battlegroup. My questions are: (1) How many fight ...

Re: Runners and Riders BHGS Doubles

Enjoyable comp! Would be interesting to see the round by round scores (hint! 😊). Other players have been bringing battle mats for some time Chris Perhaps organisers could routinely ask/remind players to bring mats, Pete? That happened at BayFOG last year. Every table had a mat; it looked superb and ...

Re: Runners and Riders BHGS Doubles

Pamela and I will be using Later Macedonian. I'll send my list in shortly.

Can we invite/allow players to bring along their own battle mats? They look so much better and it's easier to move troops on them.

Well, as I've seemingly inherited the organisation of the Godendag competition, we could try it there.
Good man! :-)

Re: Handicap system for comps...

...would you base this at the year end? I'd recommend that you would? Sounds like the logical answer and players would know exactly what their situation is at the start of each year. Is the top 20 too large a number? What about top 15, then next 15? Might be a bit tricky as a lot of comps no longer...

Re: Handicap system for comps...

I think though that, rather than some mechanics based around ranking or similar, it might be better to rely on the benign dictatorship of the organiser as to who is a beginner. That might cause problems of its own, Graham. Different organisers could come up with different handicaps for players. A v...

Handicap system for comps...

Just thought I'd post on the results so far in our handicap system as used in MAWS's Warlord Trophy this year (in three periods). Players have been divided into three groups: 'veteran' (who get the standard 800 points), average (850 points) and less experienced/beginner (900 points). There have been...

Re: Scoring system for 2019 - Call for a vote...

When you say absence of effective action to try and reverse that are you perhaps forgetting the introduction of version 3? Which many people on this list put here put a great deal of effort into for no monetary reward. And Mr Gaukroger, while you not be aware of it, has put a huge amount of his tim...

Re: Scoring system for 2019 - Call for a vote...

When I started playing in FOG comps at the end of 2014 there were heading for 200 players in the FOG rankings. Now there are less than 70. I find that an alarming trend and, in the absence of any apparent effective action to try and reverse that, have made several posts, suggesting what might be don...

Re: Scoring system for 2019 - Call for a vote...

this kind of analysis is flawed. You aren't comparing like with like.
I am comparing like with like. I've looked at the current top 50 ADLG players and found 30 of them appear in the 2012 FOG rankings. They're the same players from both lists...

Re: Scoring system for 2019 - Call for a vote...

The 2015 FoG rankings included many players who had already stopped playing FoG, and who's ranking was plummeting month by month as a result of the number of eligible competitions they had entered dropping below the minimum needed for a "full " ranking. Down at the 150's you are looking at players ...
