Re: Other Artillery stuff

So, I just want to ask. Let's assume we go with the 'can't shoot into the flank sector'. I have a pair of medium guns. I want to use them to protect my flank somewhat, so I have them set up 3' back from the left flank pointing straight down the long edge. Since they have a range of 2' and they are 3...

Re: Dragoons

Wagner, "European Weapons & Warfare, 1618-1648" (1979), p.84, shows dragoon horses tied together by the reins that would have made remounting in an emergency nearly impossible. I don't see any evidence of "shoot and scoot" battlefield behaviour from dragoons in this period. I would see that as the ...

Re: Mounted Points

Just an idea, if we dropped the points score for cavalry by 1 or 2 points, and then put a line in the points like this:

"Cavalry able to evade: +1"

Then you're not charging for a weapon capability, but you are just not getting a discount if you're lance armed.

In which case I vote for 14.38 points a base.

Re: Bows

Bows do have the advantage of being across the whole frontage which at short range gives them 6 shots to a std P&S of 4 shots which means on average 3 hits to 2. This would be significantly less of a problem if the 4/2 and 6/3 P&S unit actually got some sort of impact/melee benefit for, you know, a...

Re: Mounted Points

Quick question for you all. Last time we had a discussion about mounted points I suggested that the following was a reasonable benchmark to start from: IMO the benchmark for working out what new values would be appropriate is probably that Superior, Heavily Armoured, Horse, Impact Pistol, Melee Pis...

Re: Commanded Shot

I'd like (for simplicity) to re-hash the idea of the commanded shot being EXACTLY like a Regimental gun. I understand that they functioned differently, but I'm not sure if the overall result isn't achieved with this AND makes ruling a lot simpler. A disadvantaged bg gets an extra +0 dice, so 50% cha...

Just a quick last minute salvo, It would also affect the French Hougenot. I'm not sure if it would affect others. Just pointing out that the rule raised BECAUSE of Colunrlas don't necessarily affect ONLY Colunelas.

Re: Artillery behind fortifications

Bit of an opening bid, on a semi random basis You could also go with all guns in the battery able to fire up to 4 base widths either side of the width of the whole battery (as the single-gun shot at the edge of the arc of fire has always seemed to me a bit of an artifact of the rules, as it often l...

I don't understand your problem with the fortification NOT being in line tho. There are instances of 'combats that can't line up' in practically every game.

Re: Artillery behind fortifications

This is starting to venture into Siege Warfare, which is not something the game attempts to cover. Wow, having the ability to have artillery behind fortifications that can pivot suddenly changes the game into siege warfare? How do you figure that? The ONLY difference we're doing in the rules is all...

Re: Artillery behind fortifications

Maybe an entirely new points cost (different to normal fortification costings) for 'redoubt to hold X artillery", and then just allow the fortification to wheel with the unit ? Actually, I quite like this idea. It seems to make sense within the 'star fort' mentality too. Then you could (at your cho...

Artillery behind fortifications

Hi All, One thing that seems strange to me is the limitation on artillery not being able to pivot if behind fortifications. Whilst it's true that they wouldn't be able to move the entire fortification with them and swing around in a line, artillery would indeed pivot within the fortification to brin...

Re: Commanded Shot

They don't, and this is why we end up with commanded shot being used with troops that they never supported historically. I really can't see that by having an amendment to a list saying commanded shot can be added to <<troop name>> would cause confusion - it is a pretty straight forward amendment IM...

Re: Bows

I found that the Ashigaru archers of the Japanese army is pretty damned good. I'd take more than 24 if I could. In one competition my opponent was muskets behind fortifications and it seemed odd that I was at evens at 3.5" with him. I don't get the 'warrior bows' comment, because aren't most bow arm...

Re: Other Artillery stuff

I'd be much more in favour of forcing Arty to deploy first and NOT stopping them from firing into the flanks. I don't think you can do both realistically, and if you are only going to do one, then deploying them first seems to mitigate a few sins, whilst stopping shooting into the flanks only mitiga...

Re: Commanded Shot

So I think I'd suggest that commanded shot are bought on a per BG basis (at X points) and are represented by a marker attached to the BG - which mounted can get them is detailed for each list so that they can only be bought for the type of troops that had them historically. This could cause confusi...

Re: Commanded Shot

It seems to be getting a little complex Nik, especially the POA= or better get an extra dice bit. I can see this being forgotten/causing problems. Perhaps (for simplicity) a BG with commanded shot just get a +POA. So, if they are overall - they go 0. If they are overall = they go + if they are overa...

Re: Game set up

I've got two views on this: Firstly - I would think that borrowing too much from FOG:AMv2/3/4/or whatever starts to become more like a FoG:Rv2 which I don't think we're really wanting to do; and, Secondly - if an army has tonnes of mounted (>24, enough to get a +2 as per your concern that they get i...
