Post Viking Scandanavians

Hi All, I've been reading up on the Baltic Crusades and I'm interested to see that "[o]ne 13th century Swedish legal codex called the Upplandslagen specified that every footsoldier must be equipped with a shield, a sword, a helmet, a mail haulberk or other armour, and a bow with 36 arrows." Given th...

Re: heavy and medium gallic foot??????

can any one tell me why i should build my Gauls at 4 men a base instead of 3 I dont see any diff between Medium and heavy foot other than it takes longer to paint an army. :?: I never got to post my reply because I had to run out the door before I got the chance. Personally, I think the only way to...

Plus, when I'm fighting a battle, I count figures - if it's three I know it's medium foot. If you're going to use 3 figures on heavy foot you're going to confuse (and possibly annoy/anger if in a competition) your opponents. Anyone who got "annoyed" or "angered" because troops were 4...

However some lists do specify general must be on an elephant. And the wording in the rules definitely does not specify BG's of elephants causing disorder, merely elephants. And surely AN elephant will disorder cavalry, etc that come in range of it? Yes, but it IS specified somewhere that Generals o...

Re: Battle line Question

If I form a battle line, let's say with a unit of longbow in 2nd rank, with a unit of heavy foot in the front rank...When fighting the enemy, does this battle line function as one unit or two? Does the second rank unit of bows shoot in impact? If I lose the combat and get disrupted...do BOTH units ...

Re: Celtic army

hi, As a Principate general ,if you strip the flanks and get cavalry/chariots behind my battle line with impact foot to my front (especially if HI) I will be in trouble. Hmm, I'm starting to hedge away from Heavy and go to Medium. They are a lot more adaptable for terrain (naturally) and they aren'...

Thanks for your replies all. I'll put the figure in the unit somewhere. The BG will be "Undrilled" and of course he'll be the only Drilled guy in the BG. That means that whenever I try to do something complicated that manages to be pulled off, I'll blame the Military Order dude for telling secrets t...

Re: Thinking about Teutonic Knights

On the other hand, it's alluring to make a teutonic army. Yes, I know, painting white is not easy... I disagree. I think painting white is dead easy. It's possibly one of the easier colours to paint and get a realistic appearance. Remember, these are guys who have been fighting in the field. ...

Military Order Knights (in particular "Northern Crusade

Hey All, I'm busy painting up some "Northern Crusade" Knights for my "Post Viking Scandanavians". I've got to say, I'm enjoying painting up knights, but I'm never very good at 'do it yourself heraldry'. I started painting up one knight and half way through I thought 'he'd be a fantastic "Knight of S...

I dont't like Monk Troops so I prefer more bushi and detached follower. Better Mob than Girls and Boys infantry. 4 bases are too weak... There are poor... I'm not sure I agree with that. It totally depends on their use. For example:  If you throw them down purely as an extra BG break points ...

Re: Turn 180 and advance

I remember a very accurate game of late '80 (Hoplite Warfare) where to make a such manoeuvre with an hoplite unit was a pain. Yes, but you're forgetting the original point of my post. Tell me HOW a drilled BG of Hoplites would do a 90 degree turn and advance without any further difficulty. My issue...

Re: Turn 180 and advance

This is not always true. Ancient hoplites didn't execute a simple countermarch to make a 180 turn, this because first line should be maintained. I mean that after 180 turn the front line of the BG should be formed by the same men. This was accomplished by ' doubling the files' (the even file of 8 m...

Re: Can Saka from Legions Triumphant have Cav and Cats

Thanks All, I wouldnt want to hoodwink my league colleagues by playing with a Saka army and in some games taking cav while in others taking cats. Particularly as I am the organiser and Ive been flipping form Cats to Cav willy nilly. Anthony The funny thing is, I play SAKA and I never even thought o...

For infantry to be able to do it when the enemy is just about to contact them is IMO plain wrong. Oh, I don't doubt that you're right about that, but my comment is that it is far easier to do it than it is to do a 90degree turn, yet you're allowed to do a 90 degree turn! Just to clarrify, as it see...

Re: Can Saka from Legions Triumphant have Cav and Cats

The Skythian or Saka list in Legions Triumphant have an umbrella 0-12 bases of Noble cavalry. There are three categories: Before a certain date (Cav Bow Sword) After a certain date (Cav Lance Sword) Saka only (Cataphracts lance Sword) If you take a Saka army after the magic date could you field 12 ...

Re: Latin Greeks - Complete army pics online

Syracusans wasnt it? Well, yes, they WERE Syracusans. Now they are dead Greeks or servants for the greater glory of the Latin Greek Empire! From memory it was the cheating-never should have been there-illegally played-Roger Le Flor that did most the the damage... well, there were a few Catlans help...
