Problem solved I have the Matrix version of the game and up to now had used the Slitherine batches with no problem. Howver now that I have downloaded and applied the Matrix 1.12 patch the game plays fine.

LOS in the 1.11 patch

If your custom scenarios are in your my documents/slitherine/field of glory scenarios folder you can load and play them normally. I think that there is a fine balance to be struck here between enhancing the attractiveness of the game by making it modable and not endangering the chances of getting Slitherine to do all the expansion packs and modules etc we would like to see. Modders after all work for free while commercial game...
