Re: Sassanids vs Romans - Short report & Questions

-On the other flank a block of 4 elephants ground through my light artillery and auxiliary bowmen after a few bounds. This is probably okay, but it's hard to see how elephants can be countered. We decided in our discussion at Usk to restrict elephants to BGs of 2. This allows their brittleness to c...

Was it not 7th that first introduced the idea of elements of figures and the removal of casualties by full elements. Previously we had all had odd figures falling about the place. This was a major change at the time, is it this that everyone is remembering, rather than a good set of rules. 7th had ...

All battle groups are worth 2 AP each when routed/destroyed. Thus yes, you can use filler, but you can't afford to be suicidal with them. Nor can they give rear support (for cohesion tests), because to do so they would have to be of at least equal quality to the front rank troops. Rear support for ...

So perhaps such communcal history's are worth getting out there. Maybe we should put it on the open forum as authors. Its quite ineresting. Risky. Phil's memory of events may well differ. For example, he usually tries to blame me for the Barkerese in DBM. However, as Nik has pointed out, the...

Anyway some explanation that the three authors are, if anything, people who enjoyed 4th/5th/6th and DBM, plus Napoleonics and WW2 might give some comfort.....I don't think Terry ever played 7th and I played about 10 games in total and didn't like it. 9th in the first IWF - out of not that many (25)...

At present we created a 32-0 system so that it fits trhe same computer. In essence you track the difference in APs done and get a The difference in AP killed? Hmmm. So it may be better to let the opponent rout two--or even three--BGs of cheap skirmishers than to give up one BG of cavalry or elephan...

Further to this, the sample draft lists may be out of date. There are no offensive spear/light spear combo troops in the current versions of the lists.

I opened up the point because one tactical decision to make is find the right position for your reserves behind the battle line. And the distance where this is best place is easier to estimate in a game where a melee between two BL is static until parts rout or break off. That was the point for me....

1. Drilled don't feel worth their points at times Perhaps not, but that is not an argument in favour of over-representing the difference between drilled and undrilled (beyond what is historically justifiable) to match the current points system. As Hammy said: I can't imagine a circumstance where a ...

Proposed CMT change - your opinions sought

It has been proposed that troops who would normally need to pass a CMT to wheel within 6 MUs of the enemy should have to test at any distance from enemy. This was the situation in earlier versions of the rules, but was changed to only testing within 6 MUs of enemy to reduce the seemingly excessive ...

I should point out for those reading Hammy's post that in the latest (forthcoming) version, crossbows get to shoot with the same dice as bowmen, but with the following POAs

-1 vs all foot irrespective of armour class
0 vs all mounted (except elephants) irrespective of armour class
+1 vs elephants
