The problem with Cannae is that it is, as far as I am aware, the only historical battle in which such a tactic is said to have been used. Designing a rules system around one atypical battle causes problems. (Hmm, now where have I heard that before?) Interesting. I'm in two minds about pushbacks. I ...

Re: Optimal BG Size / Autobreak

I've been looking at unit/BG size. As Tim pointed out recently the optimum BG size is 10 bases, with 8 being the 2nd best choice. Army lists may restrict this somewhat. 4 also has significant advantages: - 2 hits required for 1 HP3B but smaller target than 6 base BG so less likely to suffer 1HP3B f...

Excellent, so at least something in AoW isn't an easily recognisable re-cycled rip-off of 7th/6th/DBM/WAB/Warhamster/Shock of Impact/Chess/Pacman.

Cannae recreation would come about with the Gauls breaking and the African spearmen hitting the pursuers in the flank. Methinks you'll be a bit vulnerable holding that one up as there is no indication that the Gauls and Spanish broke - they were still fighting at the front when the Africans charged...

Re: Thoughts & suggestions

Consider Hannibal's deplyment at Zama in three lines with his best troops in the third line. If they were testing everytime that someone in the front broke than they'd have been back in Carthage long before they got into a fight. As long as the lines were more than 3 MUs apart (less than a bow shot...

That sums up the designers' intentions nicely.

I have to confess to being a little surprised at the comments on the "lack of a C3 system". The C3 system consists of - The Complex Move test mechanism - in which generals can modify the score by up to 3 - which makes a huge difference, especially to undrilled troops. - No double moves except with a...

Re: Egypt Saved from Sea People Menace

1) Skirmishers seem to be able to outshoot MI bow. 1x6 MI bow (unprotected) in 2 ranks shoots with 4 dice at -ve POA. 1x6 jav Sk shoot with 3 dice at +ve POA. The MI bow are not on - POA. Shooting POAs don't net out, they are done per target. Thus the bowmen are on 0 POA. The exchange is dead even ...

So more views welcome focusing on two topics: 1. Would the testers like us to charaterise generals more than just IC/FC/TC? 2. Would testers like to see more restrictions on what BG can do without generals around? Bear in mind for (2) that this is not units running around willy-nilly. Each BG has a...

Does that count as a Hammytastic moment?

I hadn't appreciated the latter point you've made - i.e. if KKK was in AAA's charge reach then AAA's charge could (must?) be declared on both. A quick glance at the rules implies that its optional. "??? Additionally any enemy battle group that is also in the path of the chargers can be contacted an...

USK Rules - IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ENTRANTS

As previously stated the version used for Usk will be V 4.06 with the 5.00 ref sheets that go with it. One additional rule which we have not yet managed to find foolproof wording for - It is not permitted to flank charge an enemy BG by wheeling into it from a side-to-side overlap position (or a simi...

What POAs do Med Gerrman wagons get?
What troups can they be mixed with?
A good question. We have not decided yet.

Fair enough, so long as we have the figures for it - would prefer not to use incorrect figures for this tournament.

No doubt we can do a fairly wide range of stuff between us.

OK, I'm not playing AoW at Usk but I agree with Bruce that it would probably be a good thing if you did play as you'll see exactly how people play a whole game and can discuss things as they happen rather than just dip in and out of games. I'm sure if you were to play you can get others to babysit ...

Good news to see so many of you there. But why not play? It would be great to see people who know the rules playing some games. Even better to play you. And even better for you to play people - you'll get all sorts of direct feedback about how people are interpreting the rules. A good question. Wha...
