The scenario is winnable in the time limit on Hard but it's tricky and sometimes luck plays a factor.

Read down through this thread for a few tips and a file posted by Slitherine that gives you 20 more seconds.

I played around with the sizes some and everything seemed to work fine. I think even if you could increase the size of squads in the campaign battles the increased frontage would be a problem on several maps. Poked around in the .bmf files and found what seems to be the value for unit size however c...

Maybe it is moral? After all that bloodshed they run off to the nearest monastery to live the rest of their lives as simple monks to atone for their crimes.

And before you say it, yes I know Christianity didn't become the state religion until several centuries after the timespan of this game.

Cataphracts are extra heavy cavalry. Term roughly translated to "covered all over", think max armor and Sarmation Horse armor.

Watch the two small icons below the unit graphic. The one that looks like an arrow is their moral status; green is good, orange is shaken and red routed.

The other one is a terrain indicator. Green is favored terrain and red is disadvantage terrain.

Squad size can be easily edited. In Squads.txt is the very clear value "Men". Max. size is 79 for infantry. Haven't tested cav yet other than 30 causes no problems. edit>Max squad size for cavalry is 60. If you go over 79 in the deployment screen the unit figure will be shown off his base. The army ...

Thanks Spedius I hadn't seen this information before. Alae are cavalry and I'm sure you all know what cohorts are. Under Augustus' reforms the two main types of Auxillery Cavalry were the Ala Quingeneria with 16 Turmae(30 men) and the Ala Militaria with 24 Turmae. Two main types of Auxillery infantr...

On Normal(easy in disguise) enemies hit chance and health are reduced to 75%.

Hard is even money.

Very Hard enemy hit chance is doubled and health increased by 50%.

Principes also wear the Lorica Hamata and would be more accurate for the time period the majority of this game covers. The differences between the Republican legions and the Imperial legions was more in organization not equipment. There's also been a good deal of debate about prevelent the Lorica Se...

I activated the ballista and the purchase graphic like you said is the legionary. Ingame you have a unit of 4 legionaries with the peasant icon on the troop list. They move at warp speed and throw javelins. I'd say it's a placeholder for a feature that didn't make the final cut.

Tried adding javelins to scouts but it crashes when they try to shoot. I just copied the data from skirmishers so I'm guessing missing animations. Hmmm, not finding an error or crash log, would make it easier to see what's going wrong.

"I think" Big Hit is Armor Penetration. BTW there are animations labeled Ballista in data\Battle\units. Would be nice to have some artillery. Anyway adding equipment and skills is easy. Just edit your Squads.txt and of course be sure to make a backup first. Find the unit you want and scroll down to ...

So is anyone besides me geeky enough to rename their units?

Just wondering if I'm the only geek who gives their units names. Been going through a partial translation of the Notita Dignaitatum which although is much later than the period this game covers, 420 AD, it's a good source for interesting Latin names. By Late Roman period the core of the army was cav...

Think you need a new keyboard, your old one has a key sticking. Considering you can play with the multiplayer army design like Spedius said this stuff is hardly spoilers. Besides if you want to hide a real spoiler a better way is to match the text color to the background so you can only view it when...

The yellow arrow means one of the enemy was killed. Damage to your troops is shown in red.

I'm not 100% but I don't think there's friendly fire.

Honvedseg you miss it? It was absolutely hideous in CoW.

It's a fluke, bad luck, whatever but I've had it happen twice now to me. If you put your Legate by himself and charge skirmishers they won't fire on him so apparently the AI can't specifically target your Legate.

OK in that case I don't(or can't) see where Anti does anything. After 219 kills even at a 5% chance you should see some effect.

"The 'Anti' skill gives a % chance of an instant kill in melee against the appropriate opponent, over and above all other damage." I would agree that does imply you need to hit first which is logical. Would be a little unbalanced if you just get to kill x% of the enemy just by engaging them. This a...

I think a better test would be to get someone else and go online. One player gets a single Legionary and the other a Principe. Leave the generals out of it and simply line them up and let them charge. Do a best out of 5 or 7 then switch.
