Beta Test Thread

What happened to the GS beta test thread in the last couple days? I don't see it listed. Has it been removed since 2.1 will soon be released?

Re: GS Beta Bug Reporting

I remember the rule now. Only countries who get a morale loss when attacked. Turkey and Sweden don't. Those countries are considered to be on alert even when neutral Turkey suffers a -10 morale loss for surprise, so that can't be it (unless it is a bug). I'm guessing the issue involves the fact tha...

Re: Proper Game etiquette -- or -- when is it ok to resign?

I completely agree with Stauffenberg's comments. Often, players do surrender or quit games too soon. It can be a worthwhile experience to play out a game that you will ultimately lose. If the game has a timetable for Allied victory (as this one does), the Axis can and should soldier on in most games...

Re: Morris vs Joe Rock

I don't have any predictions for this game yet - it's too close to call. Bad weather will soon slow the Soviets down in the East, which may give Morris enough time to re-build and establish a decent front (given all the space Joe has to take back). It also looks to me like the Western Allies spent q...

and its not the drinking thats the problem :D its playing a turn afterwards  Haha! I think we're on to something. My prediction for this game: 0-1 drinks before turn = Allied Strategic or Major victory 2-3 drinks before turn = Allied Marginal Victory 4 drinks + = Danger! Axis victory.

Looks to me like you're in great shape. You're demonstrating the weaknesses of Morris's offensive strategy.
On to Berlin (eventually)!

Re: We need to fix this in 2.2: transports of iron!

As mentioned, I dont' have a problem with overall combat results versus transports. I can see using units to block being annoying. But I don't think there's any simple solution. There is the same problems with using subs or other naval units to "block" other units, particularly in chokepio...

Re: We need to fix this in 2.2: transports of iron!

I think it works pretty well as it is, for the reasons given above by the modders. Given the great number of transports at work, it makes sense that damage would be somewhat limited (but you can still do significant damage to transports). Garrisons at sea are now less survivable, so that's one probl...

Swedish Iron Ore

In looking at one of the AAR's, I noticed it was suggested the British can paradrop from Trondheim and take the iron ore in Sweden without a DOW (since the iron ore is Axis controlled). I would consider this to be a bug. If the intention is that Sweden might shut off iron ore shipments if Norway wer...

Re: Soviet units hidden resilience

It's kind of annoying for the Axis player. On the other hand, it's kind of a nice feature that a battered defender can immediately acheive guard status. It give the Russians an added defense advantage, as noted, and kind of adds a little flavor for the brutal fighting on the Eastern Front. I don't f...

Re: Future of CEAW

One thing I can't understand is why it's working well at most odds, but not when antitank value is very high. I might at some time have a look at how the odds are calcuated and compare it to the real combat results. There must be something different somewhere. I can't see anything that sticks out s...

Re: Future of CEAW

Turning the flawed odds calculator into a real combat results averager (per thread in forum) would be top on my list! Don't know how difficult this would be though. I'm not volunteering - but I've been amazed at the programming skills of Stauffenberg and others!

Re: Odds prediction is seriously screwed in late years

For some future version of GS, it might be nice to turn the odds calculator into a true combat results calculator. In other words, it would run a certain number of sample combats and then average the results in terms of the expected losses for each side.

Re: Final discussion about game balance

On the other hand, I think the Allies had to suspend most convoy operations through the Mediterranean anyway - even without actually losing Suez. The reason was Axis strength in the central Mediterranean meant it was incredibly dangerous to travel through there (even more dangerous than the longer r...

I hope you won't concede quite yet! I'd like to see you play out '42. It's still early, and things are far from settled (even if Morris has the upper hand). I'm curious what his oil situation is, for instance.

I'm not so sure. You will likely lose Moscow, but the Caucuses is interesting. I would be inclined to move the Red Airforce down that way and make a short-term commitment in aid of your defense/counterattack.

Re: Final discussion about game balance

I don't know that it's such a huge problem as is. You could also just increase the economic value for Egypt/Suez a bit (and reduce the value somewhere else). And you could increase the economic value a little for Libya and reduce for Italy. Not that Libya was worth so much. But it could reflect the ...
