Re: 'Recovering' while steady
However I would limit the steady reform CT to units that have performed an outcome move that turn. Maybe say "units that have been involved in an assault". A charging unit could have their wavering target flee, or be cavalry which destroy their opponents. No outcome move, but still a chan...

Definition of 'Mercenary' Men at Arms
I recently found a pile of old lead in a cupboard (well, that's what I told wife anyway! 8) )that will just about make up a Free Company army from Storm of Arrows. I saw in the v.2 rulebook that average drilled MaA's listed as 'Mercenary' can be upgraded to superior undrilled. By definition, everyth...

Re: 'Recovering' while steady
I would like to add my support to Brett and Kit's sentiments. As a player of unreformed armies, it is frustrating enough that there is a minimum 50% chance that my infantry will show their backs to the enemy on an outcome move. The only consolation is that they at least have a possibility to face th...

Victorian Napoleonic Championships - Steve's Report
Dan and Tyler have given an excellent run-down of the format for the tournament, so I will just leap straight into the battles. The lists for my Saxons can be seen here: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=190&t=51163 Round 1 – Durnstein vs Kit Goldsbury Victory in this scenario was ...

July 2014 FOG:N Tournament - Army Lists
I thought it might be easier if we had a new topic to present the lists from the tournament. We each had to have a 650pt and 800pt list. Different scenarios required one or the other. Here are my 1809 Saxons - two wins and two losses. 800pt List Corps Commander - Competent 30 Div Commander - Compete...

Re: July 2014 FOG N tournament Melbourne
Richard, many thanks and much kudos for putting this event together. :D This is the first competition I have been involved in for many years, and my first ever for Napoleonics, and I had a great time. Thanks to my four opponents, who both won and lost with good grace and humour. I enjoyed all my gam...

Re: Cavalry and artillery moving through a built up area
To be in a march column you need to be on a road. Not quite true - a march column on a road allows for a double movement allowance. Reformed infantry move at 6MU in tactical or march column, so no benefit if you are not on a road. Unreformed infantry in march column get to move 6MU in normal moveme...

Cavalry and artillery moving through a built up area
Just to clarify something..... The FAQ says that cavalry and artillery may only enter a built up area in march column. It also says that troops in march column may only enter or leave a built up area via a road. Does this mean that cav and arty may only ever move through a built up area if a road en...

Re: Defender Decalring Assault in 1st Two Turns
Important thing to remember is that while the unit(s) launching the assault can move out of the deployment zone, you still cannot move out units to support. It is possible to engineer rear support, especially with a cav on cav combat (4MU counter-charge etc.), but flank support will be pretty much o...

Re: and the charge wheel yet again...
As far as the wheel is concerned, the final word (as far as I can remember) was that the rule was not meant to prevent units from getting into contact. It was intended to stop the small micro-management that might be tried to avoid support shooting and combat flank support. For this reason, a small ...

Re: Davout at Auerstadt
Greetings, and welcome to the dark side :) To answer your question, in a straight cav on cav fight, cuirassiers will usually eat chasseurs for breakfast - but as you say, the chasseurs would try to avoid that match-up if at all possible. But the great thing about these rules is that they reward comb...

Re: Cavalry charges intercepts and couter charges
Reading this thread again, I think that the easiest interpretation is that an intercept cancels a counter-charge. It's simple and how most of us (I think) have been playing. I could not agree more. And this thread has been concentrating on cavalry - we haven't even begun to consider the effect this...

Re: Buildings on a hill.
All good points, but given the relative size of terrain pieces, there would not be much room outside for many more troops.
Though that may just be something to do with the terrain we use!
Small hills and big villages.

Re: Buildings on a hill.
That's what I thought. The only reason I asked is because the FAQ specifically states that you can put the village on a hill, and I've been trying to think of a reason why you would choose to do so. It seems much more sensible to put the building elsewhere, so you can use the hill for its inherent b...

Buildings on a hill.
In the buildings FAQ, it says that it is possible to place a village on a hill. The only benefit I can see in this is in an assault, for the possible dice additions to the defender. This begs the question....in an assault, would the defenders be considered "uphill"? And if so, how would th...

Re: Keeping FOG N growing
In the couple of campaigns I have been involved in, we kept note of what happened during a battle and that was applied by the campaign moderator. Specifically, whether you won or lost (and how badly - pursuit etc.), which units wavered (and how often), which units broke, and which units performed pa...

Re: Skirmishers
I should preface this comment by restating that I regularly use an unreformed army, and get very frustrated when I am shot at and I am unable to reply in any way  Close range fire for formed infantry is 2MU, which I assume represents the effective range of a musket. Reformed infantry shoot out...

Re: Shooting at Extended Line from a Building???
I would suggest looking at aspern-essling since it was mainly about street fighting and trying to force the enemy out of a built up area to see if shooting alone was effective or if you had to still force the defenders out by bayonet, Couldn't agree more. Ownership of both villages at Aspern-Esslin...
