All,

More thoughts about next year. Paddy and I just fought a trial battle for a round with the theme of Mounted. We used a 6*3 table and the rule that at least 75% of non general points must be mounted. Produced a great game (I shall cast a shroud over the result).

We concluded that this would make a good round and also that it would make sense to use 6*3 for all games. Any views on all this?

Proposal for themes next year might now be ECW, Arquebus, Musket and Mounted . All on 6*3 tables but still 650 points.

I guess the rationale for 6 x 3 for the 75% mounted round could make sense to allow sufficient manoeuvre room; but not sure it would work for other rounds with only 650 points; as mostly shooty armies of that points scale will be somewhat lost on the table.....David (B)

I wonder if that is not a good thing? Allowing for divisional marching to have impact? The development of grand tactics? Give a role to the mounted arm that might seem to be lacking in many of our current games?

The real world was, after all, notably short of uncrossable edges then as now.

Anyone else to join us on Dec 12th? Bob hopes to be able to come so let us assume I have 3 spots left.

I don't play all that often, other than attendingt the odd one or two of these a year if I am lucky, so my inclination is just to play vanilla FoGR on a 6x4 if possible. It's about getting little-used figures on table occasionally, not much more.

To be honest, I'd even not be too dissappointed if we went back to the pre-amended rules!

I like the idea of a "mounted" theme on 6 x 3 but, having just invested in a 5 x 3 mat I will be disappointed if you abandon this table size for other Oxford events.

Like the last comment I collected my 5x3 at Warfayre this week. If you go to a 6' width, why not keep to full 4' depth, and play the book as is!

Thanks for comments so far. It seems that the balance thus far favours the 5 foot frontage. I certainly take the point about investment in the fancy mats. I guess Trev's point about a 4 foot depth relates to people also having fancy 6*4 mats? I understand that but the original idea of the reduced depth was a quick game. The reduced points serve the same function.

We will wait for a little more input but my own inclination is to accede to the fancy mats argument.

I wouldn’t change from 5 x 3 650 points or 6 x 4 800 pts

I certainly agree its nice to use the fancy mats, and 650pts on a 5x3 is fine. I have no probs with same points or higher on a 6x4. I dont think the extra depth slows the game down much/at all, as all it does is get an extra move at the beginning (with no action), If it was causing an issue just deploy a further 6 inches in (tournament rules specific for that event).

If an event is more specifically aimed at cavalry armies then 650pts on a 6' wide table is fine by me.

Thanks Trev,

I have heard no contrary views. Anyone disagree with this growing majority voice?

Dear all,

Implications of new Covid regulations for the Sunday event

"People are advised to test for Covid before going to crowded places or spending time with those at greater risk”, which I think would include the club.

In addition, it will be compulsory to wear a mask inside the club hall until the regulations are rescinded.

Thanks
