FOGR tournaments for 2022

Post by Buzz0000 »

As things continue to seemingly get back to some sort of partial normality for F2F gaming; I thought it would be good to get a list of KNOWN tournaments/competitions in play for 2022.

I know various folks are pushing on different fronts and I just want to complement this with a single thread of all known dates so I can start planning for next year.

On addition to an expected set of OWS hosted rounds, so far I am aware of:

JAN
Godendag 22-23
FEB
Beachhead 12-13 (not clear if FOG-R)
Burton Doubles 26-27
MAR
Overlord 5-6
APR
Roll Call (no date yet, not clear if FOG-R)
MAY
MKWS Campaign (no date yet, not clear if FOG-R)
JUN
JUL
Attack 16-17
AUG
SEP
Colours 10-11 (rumoured return, not clear if FOG-R)
OCT
Cotswold (no date yet, not clear if FOG-R)
NOV
Warfare (no date yet. not clear if FOG-R)
DEC

Anyone know about others to share?

A very provisional list - hoping to get inputs from the community as things firm up. The Overlord date is provisional - based on it usually being on the first weekend in March.

I wasn't aware that they ran any competitions at this show.
Assuming this is the one at Abingdon.

Yes, I think that's right Don. Probably should take it off the list for possible FOG-R tournaments, although it is a show I always try to get to if I can and have enjoyed our chats when meeting you there! David (B)

Roll Call will be 2nd and 3rd April. We're likely to put tickets on sale soon, have just been holding off for a little while until the future became a little less murky

Campaign will be 17/18 September, due to venue availability apparently.

'd suggest contacting someone at MKWS if the hive mind wishes to organise a FoGR event there

Re: Campaign 17/18 September 2022. I have sent an email to Neil Sutherland asking if there will be provision for a 25mm FoGR event. If this is confirmed, as in recent years, I am happy to promote & organise this. However, this time I may not be able to attend myself. I am provisionally booked for Barry Hilton's Williamite-Jacobite War 1688-1691 tour in Ireland. The first (my preferred) date for this is May but, if this does not run, the fall-back date clashes with the MK weekend.

The LGT event is moving a couple of weeks earlier this year, to a dateline which didn't really work for some of the periods at the BHGS Teams - so the BHGS teams is now staying at the same venue of Lee Valley, but is moving away from LGT to mid October, when it will run on the weekend of 15/16 October, alongside the (one-day) SELWG show (which happens on the Sunday).

We have had, and will continue to have some "singles" events in the roster where "teams" doesn't quite work for whatever reason, so in there's scope for a FoGR event there too as part of that roster.

(But, I also think there is starting to be a real question as to whether there might soon be "too many" events being punted out there for FoGR, and the number of players there are available to attend ... the risk of multiple events each failing to reach a quorum of 6 does inevitably increase the more events are placed into the calendar. Adding the Oxford events to this list might be a good idea, just so people can see how busy the calendar potentially is...)

If someone wants to put their hand up for theme setting and list checking at Warfare and/or Teams @ SELWG please contact me directly

With the 4 Oxford events added in, there are already 9 confirmed dates and a further 6 possible options this year. Which is quite a lot...

Re: FOGR tournaments for 2022

Post by madaxeman »

Just to summarise this again, the potential/actual roster of FoGR events being mooted currently is as follows:

JAN
Godendag CANCELLED
"Godendag North" 2-day

FEB
Beachhead 2-day
BADCON Burton 2-day

MAR
Oxford 1-day

APR
Roll Call 2-day

MAY

JUN
Oxford 1-day

JUL
Attack 2-day (TBC??)

AUG
Britcon 2-day

SEP
MKWS Campaign 2-day
Oxford 1-day

OCT
Cotswold (TBC??)
BHGS Teams/Pairs (TBC - can happen if someone organises it)

NOV
Warfare 2-day (TBC - almost certainly can happen if someone organises it)

DEC
Oxford 1-day

Thats 10 events which are planned to happen, plus a further 4 which are either awaiting confirmation or are more speculative.

The current rankings, covering all of the events staged post-Lockdown ending last summer currently contain a total of 15 players, who between them made a total of 43 entries across the 5 events staged in that timeframe, an average of 8 per event. https://www.bhgs.org.uk/bhgs---fogr-rankings.html

Even accepting that there are inevitably some more players yet to return from (possibly Covid-enforced, or other reasons) non-playing status (myself included), I still have an nagging suspicion that 14 events may well overstretch the enthusiasm of the current pool of UK players, inevitably leading to some of these events failing to reach viable numbers - inconveniencing those who do book early, and as a consequence damaging the chances of people signing up early for other events in the future.

It is clear that taking soundings with the group by email rarely solicits any meaningful response, so perhaps the time has come for an executive decision of some sort as to which events shoudl be prioritized, and then focus on making a finite number of events all viable and succesful instead of trying to fill the whole calendar - as this approach may well serve us all better than trying to put on a probably over-ambitious 14-event calendar (which is far more ambitious than the sorts of rosters of events being achieved right now by several Ancients rulesets with far, far higher numbers of active players than FoGR currently can command).

Perhaps something for those attending BADCON to put their heads together and discuss?
