Cardiff - Godendag

Are we likely to get enough players for FOGR at Cardiff?

Is this "Godendag" in January? I would have thought so, if the period/theme is well chosen.

I won't be at Cardiff this year as I'll be on holidays.

Happy to do list checking if needed

Keith - I think it has always been Richard who has organised it, although he played something else this year. I have to say that I preferred this year's venue to the hotel - the playing area was much too cramped at the latter.

Should we consider going down the route we took at Devizes earlier this year and go for "big singles armies" rather than the more traditional doubles? Given that there seems to be a hard core of keen players, should we be looking at the pros and cons of small(er) doubles competitions, as against large(r) singles competitions?

It has been Richard but I think BHGS have taken it under their wing. I agree re Doubles probably they have had their day.

Posting partly as a reminder to Keith about this ...

And also to say that I am up for it - singles seems sensible to me FWIW (and I prefer it).

FoGR is listed as being available at Godendag on the BHGS website but there are no details of period, theme, amendments, list checker or organiser. It's on 20/21st January at Firestorm games in Cardiff. If you follow the link to Firestorm games, then there are entries availablr for MeG and AdlG but nothing else.

I suggest you contact Tim Porter to see if you can get FoGR included but someone will probably be needed to set a theme with Simon list checking! Tim's email is bhgs@madaxeman.com.

Given that the core of the FoGR playing fraternity is based in central/southern England, how many folk actually want to travel all the way to Wales to play the same people they could have a game against more locally? Would Firestorm Games miss us?

I think it would be sensible to get idea of numbers before pestering Tim. Ray and I would like to play, Nik has said he would, who else would (on the basis of a singles event)?

I have taken the liberty of adding Godendag to the topic title for clarity. Hope that is OK.

Also what do people think the minimum number for a worthwhile comp would be?

That is the minimum for actually running something I guess, but FWIW I think 8 or 10 is a better minimum to avoid the near total predictability you have with 6 where you'll only not play 1 person. Just my view of course.

The website is simply “rolled over” from last year, but a chap called Mike Baldwin is the main organiser/contact with Firestorm so he’s essentially picked the events being promoted currently. My guess is RBS hasn’t proposed themes etc for FoGR, so it’s slipped off the list.

If there is sufficient interest (and an umpire/theme/checker) I can speak to him and get it added.

MeG have gone for singles so it’s certainly possible to do for the periods where there are smaller player pools to make doubles tricky - unfortunately the photobucket change of terms means I can’t see how many people we had last year on the Godendag 17 thread.

Does anyone remember what the turnout was as a rough benchmark?

There was 18 players this year at Godendag. There was 8 teams of two and two individuals.

Tim, I will send you a copy of the runners and riders.

Unfortunately I can not make it but Ben's daughter is studying at Cardiff University so he may go.

18 is pretty decent - would certainly make a good singles even with some attrition, although maybe tricky as doubles.

Who would want to do the theme/umpire stuff?

18 last year certainly suggests that South Wales as a location is not off putting at least

However, I think I'd agree with Tim that singles rather than doubles may be a sensible approach if it is run.

I don't have the time to do org stuff at the moment alas - need to get the update finalised for a start ... (reminder the deadline for feedback is 30/11/17 BTW).

I have looked at the themes that we have had at Godendag since the FOG R competition started in 2011: _

Godendag 2011 – Seems to be mainly TYW and ECW
Godendag 2012 - Any army dated before 1591 AD. (No battle troops with musket are permitted).
Godendag 2013 - Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire
Godendag 2014 - any army from 1420 to 1570. - No troops with Impact Pistol can be fielded, nor any non-light troops with Musket/Musket* or Salvo.

Godendag 2015 - Last Gasp of the Arquebus - Any army worldwide 1570-1609.
No more than one BG with Muskets.
Godendag 2016 - Last Gasp of the Pike - Any army worldwide 1680-1698.
Godendag 2017 - Europe’s Tragedy - Any European army 1618-1648 (including Russia and Turkey).:

Subject to what players think is the availability of Far Eastern Armies - I might suggest one of the following as a theme; -
1) America ( North and South plus Islands.) Either pre musket or completely open
2) The Far East
3) Africa

Whilst I can not come I am happy to organise things.

I think Africa would be interesting, I don’t remember an African theme.
