Southern League Southampton 2018...or not?

Post by Vespasian28 »

Time is fast approaching when we have to book a venue if we are going to do a round of the league in 2018. Last year we dodged a bullet because the new amendments were still under discussion but now they have been officially adopted for competitions and therein lies a quandary.

Problem I have is that virtually all the local players from our club, who made up 50% of the attendees, do not use and have little interest in the vast majority of the revisions. But I am pretty certain most of our more competition orientated visitors, who made up the other 50%, already use them. And we need both bodies of players interested to make hiring the venue feasible.

So, the question is would there be any interest in an Italian Wars/C16th tournament using pretty much the original FOGR rules?

I can understand if not, as it must be a pain to re-adjust for one competition but thought it worth asking the question rather than just abandoning this round of the League.

For various reasons, I haven't played FoGR since the "final update" was published, but I think I'm right in saying that the greater "staying" power of average units has been done away with (which I know was one of your big bugbears), so other than the rules on superior armour (and those regarding artillery, which we all agree on anyway), I'm not sure that there are that many rules in dispute for this part of the Renaissance era.

Are we looking at the last weekend in September again?

I really don’t mind which option we play.

Whilst I'd prefer the amended version I would be OK playing as originally published if that was the decision - assuming I could make it that it :)

I am not fussed what rules we use really although my brain does hurt sometimes. I think it is correct to say that the amendments will have relatively little effect in this period - My Italian Wars French will still win..
