Stalingrad on Field Marshall as Desicive Victory?

Post by Storyteller » Tue Aug 23, 2011 9:00 am

Hi everyone!

I replayed the campaign in FM and won Moscow 41 as Marginal Victory on purpose (I want to collect more XP until I invade the US in 1945, England is already taken in 1940). Now it comes to Stalingrad and I'm unable to gain a Decisive Victory because of the last victory point/city in the very south-east. I already dropped two parachute units nearby, but there are too many defeding units (AT, artillery, infantry, AA). For my Luftwaffe it's too far away to fight effecticly early in the battle and second I really need my bombers around Stalingrad.

Only thing I didn't try so far, is dropping my parachute units near the non-VP city before the last VP city, build one or two heavy units there and take the last city together with my parachuters.

Has anyone achieved a DV in Stalingrad on Field Marshal?
And if yes, how?

Cheers,

Hey!

I just got a decisive victory in Stalingrad a few days ago.
At field marshall difficulty i do not use airborne troops since i think they are too weak on field marshall.
I started a run with my southern troops to the southern cities.
But i can tell you it is really hard and i got it on the last possible turn.
Maybe it would have been better not to get a decisive because i lost many troops because i had to hurry so bad.
I think for the campaign it doesn't matter if you gain a decisive. And the amount of additional prestige was not enough to pay for my losses.

Great job! DV on Stalingrad is really, really hard to achieve. Respect!

To the additional amount of prestige, how much did you get? Achieving a minor victory I got something around 3.500 points, including the prestige I've got by taking smaller citys and airfields.

I think in a previous thread it was mentioned that you got the same amount for Decisive as you did for Marginal

I checked the amount and i got exactly 2880 prestige for a decisive. I hope that your "around 3500" prestige are 2880 because otherwise
you get more prestige for a marginal victory.

He was adding in the prestige for flag captures too!

Exactly. So I really can't tell what you get by a marginal victory only. So I guess it's better not to achieve a DV, because losses are lower and you have the time, to cap more "flags".

By the way, I won Kursk as DV after MV in Stalingrad, but lost two of my precious core units... *sniff*

Try flying a non-motorized infantry unit (non-core will do) to that southern port on the Black Sea and land in (and take over) that airfield. This will help as a refueling base for your planes as you pound stuff down the coast of the Caspian Sea.

You also get a certain amount of prestige per turn so in some cases you can get more with a marginal than a decisive. If I can't get a decisive, or don't want to in order to play certain scenarios, I wait until the last turn to meet the marginal victory conditions.

Maybe, if folks are wanting to not progress to certain scenarios when they get a Decisive Victory, the game ought to give them the choice of the two paths provided by Marginal or Decisive victory results. This way, players do not "play down" on purpose.

Yesterday I played Moscow 43 on FM and won a DV relative easily. I think I finished the Sowjets 2-3 turns before the deadline for a DV. After Stalingrad and Kursk I was surprised, to take Moscow without big trouble.

I created two armies, one advancing in the east of the map straight to the north. The other one took the center and went straight north-east. I encounterd a lot of russian AT units, which very easy prey for my Stukas (had a lot of good weather!) and Tiger/Panther tanks. The russian air force was a joke and I really expected much more entrenched AT guns, artillery and infantry units around the sowjet capital.

So now it's the US east coast and I have experienced units and loads of prestige. I couldn't spent everything, I even used elite upgrades on all my units and bought the maximum of core units.

Stalingrad Decisive and Marginal both give 2880 prestige. So it is "more effective" to delay and mop up all the non-VP cities for extra prestige/experience and gain a Marginal Victory.
