Leaving out Space Invaders, I'd have to say Theatre Europe on C64.
Re: What Was the First Computer Wargame You Played?
For me it was either Battle Isle or History Line. I am not sure anymore which i played first. I was enjoying the games but the real big thing for me was Panzer General. It's probably for the better i don't know how many hours is spend playing it.

That must have been Battle Isle: History Line for me, too. And then the 5 star series, which had a lasting impression obviously

Panzer General of course. Directly followed by the classic big three of gaming: Master of Orion, Civilization, Master of Magic (I am still dreaming of a real remake of the last one. Sigh).

I don't think Pong counts as a wargame, but I actually played it in an arcade. I had no idea what was going on and my friend beat me soundly!

Wargame construction set ( 1987 ) http://c64sets.com/wargame_construction_set.html for commodore 64.
I used to divide my bedroom in some states ( the bad was italy, the table usa etc.) and raplicate this map within this wargame ... first application of pure fantasy into informatic !

@macattack:
Oh yes, the grandest fleet. Hundreds of hours, although it is hard to regard this one as a true war- or strategy game (too much luck involved). I stumbled about it mid 90s with outdated computer equipment but on the search for games in the area of Panzer General. I still own an original copy on (probably) its no longer readable 3,5 floppy disk set.
Not enough sea warfare games out anyway, especially for the exciting area (1900 to 1945).

Thorsten

I found it to be kind of a disappointment, but that is probably due to playing it after Panzer General.Razz1 wrote:That was an excellent game. Their Pacific version of sea warfare was excellent.boredatwork wrote:If you exclude flight sims then QQP's The Perfect General.

Re: What Was the First Computer Wargame You Played?
There was a naval game (called Dreadnoughts or something very like it) that I played a bit in the 1990s. It was full of potential and covered at least one Russia China scenario and included Jutland and possibly some WW2 scenarios. It wasn't too bad for small actions, but for Jutland, once you gave orders to the ships it pretty much took everything out of your hands, so you became little more than an observer. Probably 9/10 for historical accuracy, but 1/10 for player interest.

I remember the Grandest Fleet. Still have it on CD. Last time I played was 3 years ago. Very good game.
Also, Perfect General was a great game too.

Battle for Normandy (SSI) in 1987 on the Commodore 64. On the Atari ST I played Empire. On the PC it was Civilization I, II & III and of course Panzer General

Battle of Britain for an old 386 DOS PC. Blocky graphics flight sim, shooting square bullets.
Galactic Empires. DOS BBS game with all text commands. "Fire phasers at spread X coordinate Y"
Then on to Panzer General.

I played Theatre Europe on a Spectrum128 - did the C64 version have the phone number you had to call to get the code number for Operation Warm Puppy?Shrike wrote:Leaving out Space Invaders, I'd have to say Theatre Europe on C64.

My big brother actually have put me on Talonsoft Western Front and Eastern Front at .. 6 year, i was trying to get better german medals than him, obviously failing. Though these 2 wargames created even more of passion about war history and WW2.
Re: What Was the First Computer Wargame You Played?
The first wargame I played a lot was Red Baron. A flight sim, not a strategy game.
The first strategy wargame I played was Historyline 1914-1918.

I think that were very good games on the tactical level, and I enjoyed them more than Steel panthers. Its the only games where I had 20 hours + sessions. There were just two things I did not like, that vehicles would only be supressed or destroyed and could not be just damaged. And one major AI flaw, that they would not do, unlike the player, combined attacks. I remember in Eastern Front II there was such an awesome scenario where you would lead two Panzer Corps in Russia with everything down to the truck. And the AI turn would last 20 minutes because it took so long to move everything.WinterWiking wrote:My big brother actually have put me on Talonsoft Western Front and Eastern Front at .. 6 year, i was trying to get better german medals than him, obviously failing.
