What's the use a of Strategic Bomber?

Post by Mordan » Tue Oct 09, 2012 1:01 pm

Hello,

I have seen 2 times an English/Russian Strategic Bomber neutralize a city. I have tried that with a German Strat Bomber and it wouldn't work. The city was empty.

Do players lose Prestige like in PG1?

Cheers.

Neutralizing works, regardless of nation, but of course it's not 100% sure.

Besides, depending on their own XP strat bombers reduce ammo of an attacked unit, which can be very useful. Then they also do suppression IIRC and of course like any other attack reduce entrenchment level.

Also, in PzC they are the best ship killers, which is IMO a bit surprising, but that's how it works here.

The strats fail to neutralize more often than they succeed; I don't know how the odds are calculated. I don't think the defending player loses prestige à la PG.

As bebro pointed out, strats are by far the best ship killers. Never invade a hostile shore without at least two of them.

Back in my PG days, I found British and American (but not German) strats to be devastating against ground-based AA. It was not so much that they did damage, but that they used up the AA's ammo quickly without taking much damage themselves. Then I would send the tac bombers in for the kill. In PG, some bombers were "heavy" while others (including all of the German ones) were "light"; I always assumed that this had something to do with the difference in anti-AA effectiveness, which wasn't clearly indicated by the attack and defense values. It will be interesting to see how the British and America bombers perform in this role in the PzC line.

If you press "L" key after the engagement (the bombers bombing target), you can see the info there. Or there are some topics in the tips and tricks sticky thread that are relevant to your questions.

If your stratbombers bombing enemy victory hex (VH) city, they'll lose a little amount of prestige. Try this and press the L key. But this is not the main use of strat bombers. Suppression, reducing enemy's supply (ammo+fuel), and anti-shipping role are the reasons why I like them. How many percentage of supply they reduce of an enemy unit depends on its "effectiveness". It's shown in the report (L key). It's affected by bombers' stars and strength. A green 10 str bomber effectiveness is 20%.

Neutralizing city/airfield ability is not my tactics. VH city or airfield can't be neutralized, only prestige reduce to the enemy. While bombing non VH city/AF won't reduce enemy prestige.

Strat bombers don't be penalized -5 Ground Def (GD) for "Low altitude bombing" when bombing, unlike fighters or tac bombers, which make them more resistant to enemy AA fire.

IMO, in PG, "heavy" or "light" bombers are just cosmetic or names. It's the stats that matters. Heavy bombers usually have longer range(fuel/ammo), better passive air attack, better air/ground defense. In the game, allied heavy bombers or axis light bombers don't differ much in capabilities of their role. The notable difference is that allied heavy bombers like Flying Fortress can deal considerable "pain" to your fighters/fighter-bombers attacking them.

I have personally found strategic bombers, very often to be the key to victory. Taking the ammo off, strong defensive units is valuable!

Strat bombers are basically heavy artillery with better range. Use em to soften up targets. As the other posts stated, they work well against entrenched (preferrably soft) targets.
