Thanks for the detailed reply Bones - much appreciated. I started 39 GC on an old version and after 1st or 2nd scenario updated to 1.2. So i guess i missed out because of that. But i would have thought the later DLC's ('40, '41, etc.) would have the heroes.

Hmm, maybe i should restart again so that i get access to them...

By the way, do you automatically get these heroes in the relevant scenario or do you only get them if you capture specific city hexes? I guess there is a post somewhere about which scenarios have which heroes. Can anyone tell me the link?

Thanks in advance.
Jim.

You dont get heroes by themselves, you get free units that have heroes already in the unit. When you get a Rudel you will be notified that a special unit has joined you, a stuka in this case, and Rudel will be a hero in the unit.

Thanks for the reply. So does the hero unit join you during setup phase, or do you have to fulfill a condition (such as capturing a certain city or airfield) to get it? If its the latter, then i'm wondering that maybe i just didn't capture the relevant hex, especially as i had the latest patch installed since mid way through 1939.

With the exception of Rudel 2.0 who you only get if you have deployed Recon Rudel in Minsk 41 and he survives until turn 3 or 4, all the other early ones 39-42 just appear on the relevant turn. Its not like captured units where you have to take a specific hex to get them, at the start of the turn you get a message as Marty says. You then just have to check the map to work out where they are, especially the air ones as thy don't spawn next to airfields, I'm pretty sure they aren't given extra fuel so they wont crash sometime before scenario end, if you don't realise they arrived.

I guess its theoretically possible you wouldn't get one if you had blocked all possible spawn hexes with your existing units, but with where they tend to spawn you would have deliberately do some very odd moves for that to occur.

As a final note, I believe some of the later ones are aux units so you don't get to keep them, but at least up to where I am in 43 the ones received have all been core.

I'd like to see more labeled enemy heroes (like you see in '45) throughout the war that are worth MORE prestige when forced to surrender, or are worth more for regular kills!
And I'd sure enjoy taking one out.

Thanks for the feedback. Its obvious then that due to me using a save pre patch, i was not getting access to the heroes. However, this seemingly only applied to '39 and '40 as now i am in Smolensk '41 and 2 heroes popped up early in the scenario (a panzer II and a Gebirg.). So i seem to have just missed out on the first 2 years worth of special heroes. :)

Oleh Dir is a one unit blitz. I overstrength send him out with a recon unit and some occasional fighter support. He cleans out towns, artillery positions, AA. Nothing seems to get in the way. He made it to Minsk in Minsk 41 by turn 5. If he just had extra ammo.

If you can force an overstrength unit to surrender you get tons of additional prestige. In AK there are some Churchills that have a base strength of only 1, and I once got about 1100 prestige from forcing one to surrender at 7 or 8 strength.

If I remember right the majority of named units are overstrength 13 or 14, so the message is - spot them early, try not to hurt them, surround them, suppress completely (not that easy) and hit with that Panzer 2 you've been using since Poland....

One game he got an additional +1 movement hero and a +2 attack hero. He was one bad ass grenadier :)

Rudel must be the equivalent of a one unit nuclear armageddon then! +9 Attack? Seriously?

And that assume he doesn't get another attack hero or two! Can you imagine getting two additional +2 or +3 attack heroes for him?

I had +2 or +3 attack hero on Rudel once. I was initially surprised there was hardly any difference, but after a bit of [control +L] it appears that no matter what the difference between attack and defence your maximum kill chance is 81%. I converted his Stuka to a HS129 to share the love equally between soft and hard targets.

Rudel with two Attack+3 Heroes amounts to an awesome Attack+15! Very good for taking out AAA (self-propelled or not). The Defence+9 also doesn't hurt.

If I'm using a lot of infantry in a scenario, Oleh Dir will be the last infantry unit I move because you can commit him to targets that are out of reach of your other infantry units.

You can commit him to targets that are out of reach to your tanks in some cases! :)

I got +1 move hero for Oleh Dir one time. If' I'd converted him to Kradschutzen he'd have been keeping up with the Stukas (and stopping to refuel every third move)

+15 Attack = x2 power of the Stuka! AWESOME!!! Makes sense though, seeing as he destroyed:

- 800 trucks
- 500 tanks
- 4 ships (inc. 1 battleship)
- some fortresses
and escaped from enemy territory something like 10 times.

The +9 hero and experience bonus are usually enough on their own to get the max (81%) kill chance on almost everything, so two +3 defence heroes would probably be even better. For taking out AAA the extra defence should reduce the chance of an AA hit to minimum (6%), so you're probably losing a point only every other attack, and with a good chance of a complete kill.

But with +6 Defence, you can convert him to a fighter bomber. You won't need the escort fighters so you have an extra slot for an artillery unit to suppress the AA before you finish them off. But then you have only one Rudel and so many targets....

Life can be so difficult when faced with choices!
