[Suggestion] Heroes with + Ammo perk

Post by Dragoon. » Sat May 10, 2014 11:15 pm

From all the Heroes we already have in the game we completely forgot the faithful quartermasters of these armies of the world.
The guy that can get you a 40 year old bottle of Irish whiskey on a godforsaken in the south pacific, or Like Sgt. Crapgame at the beaches of Normandy, that can get you 15 Thompson, 2 .30 cal. MG, 2 Bazookas, 2 field radios and enough supplies and ammunition to last a platoon of men in the field for 3 days. So lets add extra ammo/fuel heroes to the game.
Who wouldn't love a paratrooper unit with a hero with requisitions skill that gives him +1 or 2 to his ammo count? :D

Ammo or more general supply heroes (eg +1 moveworth of fuel) would be a nice addition. Although an ammo hero on a Panzer 2 or fuel bonus on the Piaggio bomber would be the equivalent of spotting heroes on artillery. SE units already get +1 ammo which keeps them useful for longer, and I take account of ammo capacity when developing my artillery mix.

Much like radar adds +1 initiative within a particular range, it should be possible to create a supply base that adds +1 ammo whenever you resupply within a certain range or automatically restores one ammo to any unit in range at the end of a turn and for individual scenarios it is possible to create auxiliary units with extra ammo or fuel (paras in the 1940s Hague scenario, the recon bombers in Smolensk 41). My modding skills don't extend that far, so you'd need others to help out on that.

Yes, that would be a great addition. I think there was something like that in People´s General.

Yep, there was the saver hero halving (!) ammo consumption. Priceless for the few units with very limited ammo, most noticeable AA, especially Russian/Chinese AA with its stock of 3.

Although i would love such a hero for artillery units and for Pioniere/paratroopers, I would hate to waste a slot for such a guy on everything else, so am not in favour of said addition.

Thorsten

Maybe someone could mod in a function like this (extra Ammo Fallschirmjager units - a new type of SE?)

Not me though, got 3 other mods to deal with!

What about Heroes giving terrain specific bonuses ? +2 in woods only, or something like that. Or bonus against specific unit types, Tank Killer or so. Cheaper reinforcements for a hero with good connections.

On the other hand, I remember types of heroes in PGII which I wouldn´t want to see in PC:
- scout, which gave recon move to regular units, which was a game breaker on a fighter plane
- weather specialist, which allowed airplanes to attack during snowy weather

These are good suggestions and would be a great addition to the hero pool. I certainly would love to see the hero pool widened with more types of heroes, like the more specialist ones you suggested, than the general attack/defense/initiative heroes we have now.
But you are right! There should be some restriction what type of hero can be added to certain unit types to avoid OP situations.

In my various GC playthroughs the stacking of +1 range arty heroes on already range 3 artillery caused the biggest imbalance to the game for me. Range 4 arty is to OP, although range 3 rocket artillery is quite a crowd-pleaser too. In my second playthrough of '42 I already had 2 or 3(definitely 3 later) at Sevastopol. That allowed me to hit otherwise out of range rear guard AA, and then bring my full airforce to bear with little or no losses. At Sevastopol, Stalingrad and the breakout later this was a significant advantage.
In my current game I got a +1 movement hero on 88 during the late stages of GC '40. This was very OP too until '42. During the last battle of GC '41 (The pocket battle), I went nuts with it, and could only be stopped by the mass spamming of KV-1 (C) later by the AI. It was also the first time for me I manged to completely wipe off the AI of that map with very little losses on anything higher than general diff.

I'd much rather a move hero on arty and AA than range.

88 with +1 move is vey good. Better than most other mobile AA. I had two in AK once, and an Italian 149mm gun with range 5. Unfortunately almost every other hero in that game was spotting, so by the time I got to Persia, I could see everything but couldn't harm it unless it was an aircraft within 5 hexes of my two 88s or a soft target in the open within six of my 149mm gun.

My three move 7.2" gun in AC was pretty good for keeping the infantry safe.

I personally think hero bonus are too OP and the game would be better off without these. I used to do a lot of reloads when I started this game just because they're so good, now I just clench my teeth when at Minsk my tanks start turning up with spotting heroes *cry*. I think it would be fine to leave them on the special heroes since they're fixed or allow the player to assign them from a set pool to the units of his choosing but get rid of the +3 and the range +1 one.

Hero's give a certain RPG feel to PzC which I think is good to broaden its appeal. Personally I would prefer them to be less random, maybe even a hero tree where you could work towards specific goals for each hero you get. I agree that +1 range hero's are a massive boost on artillery, maybe too much on ones with 3 range already, but absolutely what you want on a Stug or range 2 rocket artillery.

anything that adds depth, texture and variety of options, to me has to be a good thing, so I like some of the ideas already mentioned here.
