What are peoples favourite maps and why, also most hated

Post by Stephen1024 » Tue May 24, 2016 10:11 am

I like hear what are peoples favourite maps and why can use any map from any part of panzer corps, panzer general or peoples mods.

Please list map where its from.

I am planning building a grand campaign I want try build something that will be fun and loved lots. There be one for German's, Allied and Russian campaign.

I plan have Black SE units there be bit more selection on SE units. Standard units come as gray or camo. Units that gain hero show a graphic below so you can see which have.I use black and white photos for big unit pictures. I will make few videos for the campaigns probably 1 video for each part war, so example if we are in Africa, then at start that part campaign I have Africa video. We will try add in few new medals. I will do few Special forces maps to, that give some smaller maps with less units so mix things up bit.

If others willing help out bit then maybe I try get a Burma campaign built to as Burma not going have massive naval need. If a good few are willing help then maybe we can call it the Panzer Corps community Grand campaigns.

I posted this here cause want know what maps all people like what features people would like, I try build it with peoples wants, There might be somethings can't add.

I hope that if we can all help this come together maybe help breath some life back into Panzer corps. Give us all new fresh something to do.

I've played the basic campaign and Allied Corp so far. It's hard to think of specific maps that were my favorite per se, but the best ones were the maps that gave multiple attack options. Some maps had a single obvious attack point; the best maps made me look it over for a while before I decided the best way to go about the mission. Do I try to ford that river or push to one side and go around it? Should I plan to drop paratroopers to flank a narrow mountain pass? What order should I go about attacking the objectives?

I have to agree I prefer those maps with multiple paths, I like mix smaller maps and big maps. Tank open space and closed affect of mountain's woods and or city. So it keeps things alive not boring.

My favourite maps would be those that I made for the mods. But I'm a bit biased there so will ignore.

Otherwise probably Rush to Moscow and the first USA one from Wehrmacht, India from AK, Silver Fox from SC.

My preference is usually smaller maps (or at least less detailed ones), as there is less to worry about from a random hero-boosted unit bursting out of a forest and destroying the truck carrying your 5* infantry or AT gun. India was good in that you choose what part of the map you will focus on.

Stuff like Poland in Wehrmacht is also good because you don't feel like "if I do this wrong the game quartermaster is going to murder my face!". That was the main experience I had with the later years of GC.

I like maps with multiple attack points and a mixture different kinds of terrain so you have to think about what you send where. I particularly like battlefield europe map, some of the early grand campaign ones and some of the early afrika corps ones. The bfe one has lots of different kinds of terrain and lots of different paths for doing the same thing. I definately DONT like the later grand campaign ones as in those: it doesnt matter what kind of map it is as if you turn off using fog of war you will see a sea lots yellow dots in the mini map, they cover most of the map so the map becomes IRRELEVANT, it just comes down to who has the most big tanks. In McGuba's BFE (and Akkula's great patriotic war' ) even though there are hordes/a vast amount of enemy units, it still leaves room for intelligent variations/ingenuity because the map is so big. There is a low unit to map ratio.

Love:

1) Spoils of war (GC39) - fun to battle soviets this early.
2) Arras (GC40) - balanced defensive/offensive scenario.
3) Dunkirk (GC40) - just like It. :)
4) Vyazma (GC41) - good challenge, bad weather.
5) Streets of Moscow (GC41) - like city fighting.
6) Colmar Pocket (GC45W) - challenging defensive scenario
7) Battle of Bialystok-Minsk (SC) - balanced defensive scenario.

Hate:

???
Maybe Syracuse (GC 42/43W) - don't like the evacuation mission.

Love/Hate:

1) Gazala Line (AK) - pure evil. Very difficult, but fun.
2) Taranto Raid (AC) - strange scenario, but kind of fun on the other hand.
3) Winter War (SC) - like Gazala, but easy.
Make love, not war.

Not all the time, but more often than not. It is more fun attacking objectives than defending them.

Well Stephen you are planning on a ambitious project hahaha I have a few map that really interest me but I can't remember the name at the moment, I will update you again later when I finish work. Below is the summary of scenarios that I like.

1. Counter attacks, specific and good timing counter attack from enemy is vital as it will force players to decide do I stay a turn to resupplg or push facing huge risk. The map with a lot of russian artillery at front line, you need to time the attack on artillery front, before those armors rolls in, can't recall if atm but that scenario also have a flanking enemy landings on the west side of map. The other example is the GC39 Polish counter attack that comes in waves and you hold the bridge.

2. Multiple hidden path ie rail transport, any map with a rail line captures my attention as that is the most valuable movemg you can ever have. If done correctly ie usually my para will capture far away rail line town so when my army smash the front lines I can use it to relocate fast, learn that from the map attack before Moscow 42 I think where the middle is super strong with bad weather and muddy ground. Also river is important as I think many players so not use bridge engineers which I do a lot for all flag capture style as sometimes a single bridge save a lot of time and a good flanking attack.

3. City fights, what's not to like its very hard, needs a lot of planning and even the best planning gets you kill on mistakes. Moscow, stalingrad etc

4. Defensive mission that is near hopeless, at least the chance for tow AT/AA to shine like Korsun IiRC. That scenario really makes me panic to the last turn hahaha so tough as I push for all flags.

5. African Koprs have most of my favorite maps like Palestine etc as it gives a huge open grounds for tanks and some minor town for infantry actions so the correct force is needed to break the line without much losses, bring the wrong army you are dead hahaha I remember Palastine map well because it adds a flavour to safe those pumps and rushing up on open ground is very risky especially when I use inferior italian tanks for italian achievement.

6. New US GC map like the defensive action that you only deploy on turn 4 and using the french as cannon folder to buy space which again a lot of tactical challenge as saving the correct hex for your force to arrive is vital. Also another example is the GC west evacuate the italian troops from Sicily IIRC.

7. Scenario objective twist like AK is very fun even for replay as you need to plan ahead for the changes. Also I like AK becoz a lot of hidden mines which again makes the progress to be cautions. I prefer AK more as in late GC I find red armor keep rolling in abit non creative hahahaha.

8. Full flag capture challenge is my favorite as I am those players that capture everything and sometimes I regreted as the income vs losses is bad investment. I like far away flags that is surprisingly full of hard troops hahaha kinda feel like the real ambush suprise like Suez Canal hahaha. It's should be difficult but possible path at great risk. Makes tactical choice far harder.

9. Multiple road different challenge to main objective like Greece is great as if 1 road is hold up the final assault will be weaker as some troops are not there yet. It's give me the headache to deploy the correct amount of troops on each road to be able to arrive at the same time. Also on France I think there is a map example like that before Dunkirk.

Basically scenario that is fun to me are those that stick to the core concept of PzC easy to play hard to master hahaha and when you think it's easy bam you get punish for over confident

Good luck on the project will be looking forward to your work

My single one favorite map is Gazala (Afrika Korps).
1. Its a big map. 2. There is a lot of stuff do and there are a ton of ways how to do it. 3. There are a lot of possible solutions how to win it and make the most out of it. 4. Its a map with a lot of different battle zones, where you have to advance slower and faster, with some steady frontlines and other areas with fluid tank battles, where it can get chaotic.

But sure, there are a lot of good maps. Some I also really liked are Dash to the Wire (Afrika Korps) and the Minsk 41 map in Soviet Corps. Both make a very good use of dynamic events. "Escape from Stalingrad" (GC 42): nice breakout map which can lead to chaotic battle. Scapa Flow (Sealion) is one of the best amphibious fighting maps. I liked all the "Market Garden" maps in GC West 44 except the last one where your starting positions change in order what you achieved in scenarios.
The "Cobra" map in Allied Corps is a very good example for a pretty, pretty hard late war map which still is dynamic and has many surprises despite not having special events.
The latter two brings me to the maps I don't like:
many 1943-1945 are Slugfests where you have often scenarios where you rarely move your tanks more than 2-3 hexes.
Two of the worst are Oboyan in GC East 1943, or Eindhoven in GC West 1944. I find most "big city" maps a bit annoying like, for example, Berlin in Soviet Corps. Regardless the time setting, they always are kind of the same.
I don't like when maps stray to far from what you would expect it to be regarding the historical subject. Villers-Bocage in Allied Corps is one outstanding example; while it was one famous ambush victory, it was done more like a city siege in the actual scenario.

Despite not getting a DV in any of them I enjoyed the 3 Stalingrad scenarios most of all. I stared playing East '41 and they were a nice change after the previous maps.

I started Poland a couple of weeks ago and am halfway through west '40. Already building up my infantry with Stalingrad in mind.

From the vanilla campaign I enjoyed the less "milked by every game company" scenarios, like Poland, Norway even the what if ones.

The only Scenarios I kinda dislike is the 2 achievement ones on Colonel difficulty, yikes, so few troops and so many Russians :S
"Field Marshal diff nearly broke me, not doing Rommel/Guderian/Mannstein.......yet..."
Campaigns completed:
Vanilla : Field Marshal
Campaigns active:
Afrika korps: Colonel
GC39: Colonel

So I started to play a few random multiplayer maps recently and now I am wondering what are people's favorite multiplayer maps (both balanced and unbalanced) and why?

Any suggestions are welcome/would be much appreciated, thanks! :D

Oh my so many I can't even begin to name them all, and faves change from time to time.

My favorite at this moment is Return to Kiev, as the battle starts right away and the struggle is real between both nations as they fight back and forth.

Not multiplayer but in general I love the maps that are repeated in successive scenarios.

Morning Wind, Gela, Salerno, and Anzio in US Corps are good examples.

Thanks both!
@goose_2: yes, I tried Return to Kiev: not bad, it combines several elements on a single map.
@huckc: I think I understand what you mean with repeated maps, so is it because you know the map and that different situations can arise on the same map, or why? Just curious...

I also have the impression some late war maps are just unwinnable in certain constellations against a human player...

By the way, can you also load GC maps into multiplayer, i.e. via the custom option?
