Mt first play though I went sill and things bigger was better and went 21cm. The lack of ammo and ROF makes it unsuitable. 5 ammo, and I don't like having just one left unless I'm clearly on the attack. So reloading every three turns sucks.
But one good aspect is that they're good at suppressing heavy Soviet armor in 44 and later. Which let me soften them up because air attacks are hard due to spaags. I got a lot of surrenders that way

I have to agree with Buffalohump.
I was playing a private British North African mod and ended up with two range hero 25 pounders. I thought of upgrading one to a 4-range 5.5" but in a small core army (18 or 19 units + 3 SE) the switch was too useful and with a lot of Italian or older German armour to face, the high ammo count and 110% RoF were also good.

I think certain heavy pieces are quite badly represented in PC.. for example German 17cm K17 gun was capable reaching ranges over 28km, which was twice the range of best 150-155 howitzers in WW2.. there were only few gun capable doing so, US 8in, and to some degree Russian 203mm and Long Tom 155 (range of 23km). Anyway having all these guns with range 4 means their double range against everything else is never realized... Personally, i would give Long Tom range 4 and remaining mentioned guns range 5. (in my equipment file i use simple 5km per hex formula for artillery)

Some light artillery as well. The 75mm howitzer should have the same range as an 105mm, and it should has a movement of 2, so that it could be an ideal companion of Gebirgsjager and Faschirmjager.

And the heavy ones should have 0 movement, there’s no way you could move a 17cm by hand and then fire it in a single turn.

Nico's mod gives the 170mm gun range 4. This makes it useful but because it has RoF 80% and only 6 ammo it isn't over-powerful, and you usually need lighter guns as well (the 105mm) for defensive fire and for general purpose use against soft targets. I've also tried (in a half finished French mod) a GPF 155 as a non-purchasable siege gun with Range 4 and FortKiller trait, but with reduced RoF and 4 or 5 ammo - useful for dealing with Siegfried Line forts and strongpoints in 1939 but not over-powerful

I've tried experimenting with 2-range 75mm guns, either as infantry guns (2 move) or mountain guns (2 move and mountain movement). As these are supposed to be relatively mobile guns, I reduce RoF to 100% and ammo count to 6 for infantry gun, 5 for mountain gun. This seems about right for play balance. I tried a 2 move 155 infanrty gun with range 1, (2 range was a bit too powerful). This was not that great for a core unit but it makes a nice AI unit or a no-upgrade aux unit. I'm thinking of increasing the standard 75mm range to 3 and delaying availability of the 105 (so aux only), but I should really finish off at least one of my current mods before trying this.

range 4 doesnt give 17cm K17 or US 8in artillery justice. After all these guns fired at ranges around 30km, while normal 150-155mm howitzers could only do 12-14km max.. so unless these get range 2, while long range guns have range 4, its not really fair comparation. There are other ways how to balance it out - for example in my file, 105 howitzers get more ammo, therefore are way more interesting choice as support weapon for units. I usually keep at least 4 of them to support my tanks (using halftracks as transports), while keeping at least 2 15cm FHs and 1-2 17cm cannons for counterbattery work, which was exactly their purpose.
