Do you savescum?

Post by Epperaliant » Tue Oct 23, 2018 6:36 pm

Good lord, this game must be wearing my SSD out.

I find impossible to win on Field Marshall without many saves and a TRILLIONS of reloads.
Sometimes you really need a good roll to get through a mission on FM and you need a reload everytime the enemy gets a lucky roll and decimates your core units in one swoop.
Then you get bad heroes.
Bad Se units.

So many reloads...

Have you tried "Limited (Dice Chess)"... way less stress... (or as an alternative, try a lower difficulty level)

Personally, I don't like reloading, I rather start all over again...

What is savescum?

Frankly it sounds pornographic, so I would definitely avoid, as I do not want my conscience pricked. ;)

I used to when I first started playing. I think it's fine when learning the game mechanics and exploring the content but eventually you gotta take the training wheels off.

I found it surprisingly easy to cut it cold turkey. In some ways it actually makes the game easier as you get an extra sense of flow and intuition to the battle which you don't get when you're constantly reloading.

It's definitely more fun not reloading.

Ah, I see, I do reload certain turns and replay them, I have occasionally redone ai CA a few times, but I detail that in my AAR's and am ok with this as I feel I do full disclosure and I play at an incredibly difficult level.

But if you need to o this all the time, you are not playing right, and I am not sure how you could enjoy the game as that amount of micro-management would drive one crazy.

Probably you guys just play better.

To get a decisive victory I usually need all the allotted turns, and so many times a successful attack can really make the difference.

Sometimes it's easy, for example an overstrenght pioneer unit vs a suppressed enemy in a city, but sometimes I really need to reload until I get a decent combat result.

Or, for example, I often need many reloads to correctly gauge the enemy air opposition and react accordingly to avoid crippling casualties.

wow, how u can play like this ?

i haven't the problem since i discovered the "CHESS" in advanced options. It changes all the game ! No more reload for cheating IA ....

but for more fun, u have to play on field marechal difficulty.

Yeah, chess or dice chess can reduce frustration a lot, maybe also compare here: viewtopic.php?t=43070

I like the normal dice simply because I do not want to play chess. Sometimes things go horribly wrong and as general you should be prepared for that ;) It is definitely doable without reloading, so like others already said, lower the difficulty and get better over time. It is perfectly fine to take losses and lose units here and there. There is always the option to reinforce during battle or get some overstrength before. Both can help a lot.

Other than that changing the dice is fine, too. Personal preference I guess. Just do not reload and give up. You might find out, that you can still make it even with bad rolls. That is part of the fun.

The main drawback with savescumming is that you don't improve your playstyle as well as if you accept what the (semi) Randon Number Gods send your way and work out how to deal with it. Sometimes that will be by restarting the scenario - "I'll get you next time" - others by playing on to see how the problem works out - "is that it? See if I care!".

You can ease the pain a bit by using Reform Units (though you lose your exeprience, the heroes and the actual unit can be saved). Dice chess provides reasonable variability without the more extreme swings so you can more easily see when you were unlucky or when you did something that was never likely to work. Frequent use of Control + L to check combat results and control + left mouse for detailed combat prediction will help, as will looking at Braccada's videos (I learned a lot about how to plan deployment and read the map from these - thanks Braccada). Searching within the forum isn't always that easy, but there is plenty of information on most subjects (some very helpful, some very specialised).

Whatever path you choose, persistence and good planning will pay off.

Haha yeah. I didn't u til I started the 43 east campaign. Played Kharkov ten times to beat it, and I played the first Kursk south battle a whole bunch. As I could win but my forces got beat up doing so. Too much so. As in 43 even at col level there's not much room for error due to low prestige payouts

I learned early on that the best way for me personally to avoid re-loads was to add one turn. Doesn't matter what difficulty level, knowing I have one more day to get the job done does something to my decision-making process. :)

As far as "bad" heroes goes, I have a higher tolerance for mediocre heroes. You git whut you git, and you don't throw a fit.

If the hero is really stupid, then Reload Allied Turn is much better than disbanding an experienced unit.

Losing a Core to a flat-out stupid/inebriated move will warrant a reload, otherwise I take my licks.

If you are consistently getting stomped to the point of reloads, then tone it down a notch until you find your own personal rhythm. Personally, the very high levels have no appeal for me at all. Instead of the same thing over and over, just more difficult; I want more. More room, more units, more decisions.

I liken the high levels to being locked in a broom closet with a pack of rabid honey badgers. May be fun to watch on YouTube, but not how I want to spend my leisure time. :D
