Origin...

HAHAHAHAHA.

That's all I'll say on that.

Steam's Offline Mode is far from perfect, sadly. If it makes you feel any better, though, they do plan to change it, as has been mentioned in this RPS article.

There is a reason people like using steam - convenience. I just tried to purchase Pandora via your store and I'm getting a security certificate expired message on Firefox, and I can't seem to proceed. On chrome the frame is just blank. It looks like I can force my way through on internet explorer. But now I have to ponder if the site has been hacked or whatever.

I have a real problem when people make it hard for me to give them money, it calls into question if I should be doing that in the first place.

Hey greenguy289,

That sucks. It works normally for me at the moment. Perhaps it was a hickup at plimus(?).

That is rather odd. I'm having no problems with Firefox and I just checked their certificate it's valid until 2014. You can check for yourself when you click on the symbol next to https in the address bar to see the details of the encryption. Have you verified that your addons are up to date like Java and Flash?

It could be a Plimus issue, I think that is where the frame was trying to load from. Chrome and Firefox are up to date. I was trying to purchase through Matrix (first google hit), however it appears that Pandora is also available directly through a Slitherine store. This appears to be working ok, at least the first step, where you are entering your info. I wasn't aware there was a separate store, I will give that a shot.

I do appreciate the quick response.

edit: right, that worked fine and I'm currently downloading. You might want to have a chat with the gents at Matrix and/or Plimus. Apologies for being a bit short but my shoulder is killing me and my vodka prescription + the 2001 web store flashback stoked my temper a bit.

Indeed the security certificate at Matrix expired. It looks bad, but there's no cause for alarm. Slitherine's shop here doesn't give security prompts if that eases your mind.

Sorry for the convenience,

Well I'm up and running already. The download through the Slitherine store and activation was painless and very fast. I guess I was simply unlucky with my timing on the matrix store. WRT to the whole steam debate: I'm fine with other distribution systems provided everything is working smoothly and hassle free.

Haha, you right the plimus.matrixgames.com certificate expired a few hours ago. (The certificate expired on 11/17/2013 12:59 AM). Matrix/Slitherine should take this as hint to start merging their websites instead running two shops and two different communities.

IainMcNeil wrote:No we don't have a Steam release confirmed at the moment. It is something we are considering but can't promise. If we do, as I understand it we will be able to give Steam keys to existing players so if we are permitted to do so we will but I can't promise that Steam will allow that as they may change their policy which is obviously out of our control.

Thanks for the posts but we have a strategy which has worked well for the last 13 years and we are not planning GoG, EA origins etc. We have a Steam account are looking at that but this is the only platform we are considering for next year.

Hi there! I am a big fan of Steam. However, Steam is not the only way to get the title out there. What about Good Old Games? (GOG) They don't just sell old games, but new ones as well. Why not see if you could get a spot there? I have a decent amount of friends on Steam and almost every single one goes to GOG, including myself.

I love the game
Have a great day!
::Edit::
Oh I now see the post above. Too bad about GOG. If you do the Greenlight thing on Steam I'll definitely support you and link everyone I know.

The fact that you're relying on distribution strategy that's 13 years old in this day and age really shows. Financially probably fine, but prevents your games from becoming popular and known by avoiding exposure in places where the big crowds are.

It really is time to expand and modernize your distribution methods to match today's audience and demands. You've earned that much, and your customers deserve it for having kept you going for those 13 years. ;)

I agree. Also I'm not sure if they realize what a HUGE following Alpha Centari has at GOG. It would be very smart. Why wouldn't you want your game on GOG and Steam? Why wouldn't you want to be more popular? I had never heard of this company until I google search 4x games a couple months ago. Until then I had never heard of this company. Look this is as plain as I can say it. This is a good game. You need to get the word out there. You need to get its face out there. I want to see this game do well. I want to see websites talking about it. Does this company not want that too? I strongly suggest you consider Steam AND GoG.

I wish you lots of luck

I think you are right, Steam and GoG could give this game a huge visibility.
I suspect they probably don't want to use GoG because they don't want to share the earnings; of course it is correct to cut the middleman as much as possible but what they possibly don't realize is that GoG would enable them to make sales that otherwise they wouldn't do, so the net cotribution would be probably positive.

the only reason you dont have my $ now, is because you are not on steam. and you will not have it until then. (or gog).

ElegantCaveman wrote: 1. With the Winter Sale just around the corner, a 25% sale would be expected, with bigger price-cuts for subsequent sales. By at least waiting until after the Winter Sale, it gives the game more time before lowering prices.

2. From a Steam customer perspective, 30$ for Pandora in its present state is simply too much (20$ would be more appropriate). I can already see the Steam forums flooding with people complaining that it's a weak Civ V wannabe, and complaining that it's a SMAC spiritual successor without key SMAC aspects.

3. As an extension of that, if this game had more features, it could actually be sold for more. Make a full-featured SMAC spiritual successor (which I believe is the plan?), and 40-50$ actually becomes an acceptable price, at a stretch. Not that I'm saying the price should be raised, but add more features, and people won't complain about the 30$ price (which I guarantee they will if you release it on Steam as it is).

4. If Pandora was available on Steam right now, people would complain about the price vs. presently-available features, and that could actually do more harm than good. People complain about price/lack of features even for Early Access games (which is silly, but people are silly), which Pandora wouldn't qualify for since it's officially been released, so imagine what they'd say about a full release at this price.

Steam is a great way to "get the word out". Arguably, the best way to do that. But one of the problems with Steam, especially for a developer/publisher, is that with all their crazy sales, prices can drop relatively fast.

Pandora is a game with enough mass-appeal that this isn't a huge issue, but releasing a game on Steam just before a big sale is a terrible idea, regardless of the genre. Try to release it early next year. Or if you need more time to add content, aim to release right after next summer's sale.

TL;DR Add more features before you release it on Steam, and try to release it after a big sale, not before.

your points are not right for a simple reason.

i'm a avid gamer. i read all stuff about games. i have lots of feeds with gaming news.
and i read about a small chinese useless unknown game before i found out that pandora is out of the beta, and i can playit today.
i stumble on this info by mistake, reading an old post with pandora beta acces while looking for something else. tried to get into beta, and saw that is available and playable now.

pandora is a not known game. it may be great, but still is not known enough.
on neogaf forum there is a post from 30.03 about this game, and is forgotten. same situation on a lot of big gaming forums.

work a deal with steam (or gog, personally i dont like them to much, after the publicity stunt they tried to do). you have nothing to lose, you have lots to get.

What does having the game on Steam or Gog have to do with purchasing the game? Buy it, it's DRM free and you can install it forever, providing you keep a copy of the key.

It's a great game, I have many games via Steam, but not all games can be purchased that way.. don't miss out just because it's not on Steam.

I do not understand his reason either. If you buy it right now from Matrix/Slitherine Store you have the full liberty to do as you please.
You don't need download or install a client software. You don't have to create an account in any client software to be able to download or install the game in the first place. Nor is your game unlike Steam just a merge subscription that is bound to an account.
You can install your game on any computer anywhere in the world, because unlike Steam you don't have to rely on an internet connection to install and activate your game, nor are you limited by potential regional restrictions. All you have to do is to buy and download the game. Then you are done.
You can save the installer on any media you prefer. An HDD, DVD, flash drives, cloud storange of any forms, or if you're a masochist save the installer on 289 3.1⁄2-inch floppy disks. It's up to you.

If you want to utilize the Steam overlay for chatting, no problem either. Just add the pandora.exe to you Steam library as non-steam game. It works, I have tested it. It even imports the icon embed in the exe file to show up in your Steam library.

I think both systems have advantages and disadvantages and that's also why I think we should be both standalone and on Steam. In the end, it comes down to convenience of having everything over one roof using the same system versus being independent and free to do what you want with your software.

The global trend is obviously moving towards Steam, especially as they improve and loosen their DRM and connectivity restrictions. Similar transitions are going on everywhere, not just in gaming. We are relying more and more on services in the cloud every day. It's inevitable.

same reason that i would not buy stuff from sites which have only credit card option, instead of paypal for example. (beside amazon, but there i delete my credit card info every time i use it.)
is how i do things. and obviously, i'm not the only one which will purchase pandora only if it will be on steam.

get a regular game.
install main game.
install expansion1
install patch day one
install patch day 2
install patch day 99.
install expansion 3
and so.
then uninstall main game.
it lefts a lot of crap on computer, because the uninstaller did not know about patches and expansion. had to manually remove files, and god knows what dll i still have in windows.

vs steam click install, quietly update in background as soon my computerstart, and delete local content for uninstall.

tell me what you lose by selling pandora trough steam/gog/amazon. because i doubt that your losings are better than gainings. and yes, i prefer steam for the above reason, and for others. which are not really worth mention, i think i proved my pov already.
and from my pov, you are selling a game. a form of entertainment. i would like to have it ? of course. but on my terms. you dont agree ? very well, is your right. is not like that i MUST have it, no matter the cost.

i registered to post this for you guys to get a feedback about it, and to warn you that the game is something like an unknown entity at this time. the only forum a bit more vocal vs yours is reddit one, and people there are asking aswell why is not on steam.
