Version 4 questions

Post by Irlandos » Thu Feb 02, 2017 1:02 pm

A few things seem to be different in v.4...

* It seems the Germans are allowed fewer free Afrika korps troops or am I mistaken?
I'm incurring charges with only 2 bombers, one armour and one mech.

* Can I now land allied troops in northern Russia? The map seems to connect the sea of Norway to the White sea.

* Are there new rules for friendly fighters intercepting attacks on bombers?
My US bomber got decimated while a Free French fighter - in the next hex - just stood by!

not sure about Africa Corps and pretty sure you can't land allied troops in Russia, but there are changes on the map to allow better representation of the convoys

I think fighters now have a shorter intercept range the third of the 3 numbers - move/attack/intercept

but I could be wrong :-)

If selected at the beginning of the game ( on by default), Shorter intercept range for land based air units is attack range divided by 2 + 2 hexes. If there is an attack made by long range TAC and SAC the FTR intercept range will be equal to the attack range. Now in your case maybe the German fighter where it attacked your bombers could have been out of the attack range of your Polish FTR.

To look at equal attack / intercept range you can uncheck the box before beginning the game.

Regarding CV's their attack range is reduced to 1 hex while in Port. The intercept range is 1/3 attack range always whether you select long or short intercept range.

CV's in ww2 were considered the new capital ship replacing the BB. They are very dangerous against surface naval ships so protect them well.

I confirm you either that Western Allies cannot land troops in Northern Russia. They can use White Sea transportation loop, which is an always Allies-controlled loop, and so, to send ships to the White Sea (e. g. to shore bomb Axis units that could have taken Belomorsk or simply reached the coasts of mentioned sea) but transports won't be able to unload their units at all on any USSR hex (be that occupied by Axis or not). Conversely, all Soviet naval units that USSR might purchase (e. g. submarines or destroyers) can be deployed in Archangel port and sent to operate in the Atlanctic via the transportation loop.

Regarding fighter interception new rules, these were set to make this part of air warfare more realistic. This automated and rather wide interception range (same as fighter attack range) that fighter units had before applying the change in the rules, contradicted the fact that fighter interdiction missions were actually different from fighter attack missions.

To reflect that difference, I know of wargames in which interception is not a 100% guaranteed and automated event (as it is in CEAW), but it may or may not occur. While testing 4.0 we discussed about the possibility of making interception rules more realistic and agreed that the simplest way was to make interception range a bit shorter than attack range.

So to clarify: as before, fighter attack range (air-ground attacks carried out by fighters units vs land, naval or air enemy units) has the same range than fighter escorting range (air combats due to fighter units escorting bomber units). Change is regarding fighter interception range (air combats due to enemy air attacks vs our land, naval or air units) which now has as value: fighter attack range/2 +2.

There is a sort of espionage. Again it can be turned off at the beginning and it allows a slight boost (others know the mechanics and math better than me) to research in the armed forces side of things (not in the General research categories IIRC).

As for penetrating the fog of war, nope.

its in one of the threads - detailed by Staffenburg - helpfully labelled technology espionage as a startup option
