GS v4.00 resolutions

We are experimenting With trying out different resolutions for GS v4.00. The default 1024x768 is quite obsolete and not what most People use today.

The game is created in Java and a downside to Java is that you have to support each resolution separately. As a test we have tried to make the game work in 1920x1080 resolution. It seems to work quite well actually. Not Perfect, but good enough to play. Most dialog boxes have been converted and within a few days it will be done.

Having done this big task for one resolution is the hardest. Supporting others is easier to do.

However, we need to look at each separate resolution and make specific files for each of them. So it is a big task. There is no point trying to support resolutions People do not play so we need to look at the most common ones to support.

Therefore the question:
Which resolution do you use for Your Windows PC or MAC?

2560x1440 is higher than I have myself so it will be hard to code support for such a resolution.

We just need to find which resolutions are quite common these days.

Low resolution will be 1024x768 as today
High resolution will be 1920x1080. The max I can make with my current monitor.
Mid range could be 1366x768, but I know People have ranges like 1440x900, 1600x900, 1680x1050. However, some of these could be obsolete or used rarely these days.

I think a common trend is that the old 4:3 aspect ratio screens have been replaced by some kind of wide screen monitor. 16:9 is the most common. A good thing about selecting a modest wide screen resolution is that the screen will fill the game using as much of the screen as it can. If the aspect ratio is the same then you don't get black bars to the left and right like you do now With 1024x768. So we might not need a lot of the different mid screen variants if we at least get one.

Thanks. That confirms what I believed. We have 1024x768 from before. 1920x1080 seems to be the standard for high resolution. 1366x768 seems to be the most common mid resolution.

So these are the ones we will support then.

The work on adding wide screen resolution to GS v4.0 has now been completed and only testing remains.

You can now Select between low, medium and high resolution. 1024x768, 1366x768 or 1920x1080. We will release the updates to beta testers soon and then not so long after that to Slitherine for a final Version.

We need some extra help testing the New resolutions so please send me a PM if you want to test this as a beta tester.

Using 1920x1080 myself and it works very well. Mostly using zoom Level 3 now.

Any guess when this will be available to try? I am using a 4K HDTV as a monitor now, which is 3840x2160. It works great as a monitor, except playing CEAW at the old resolution is now really ridiculous. I am really looking forward to being able to play it in a window at a reasonable resolution (like 1920x1080). On this monitor I really don't want anything to be full screen--I use it more as a substitute for multiple monitors.

It's already available for beta testers. Anyone sending me their email address via PM can get Access.

Right now the game is working pretty well and seems quite balanced. The remaining issues are supply related and I think we have found the ones now. When we added separate supply rules for the Middle East and North Africa we had to adjust special rules elsewhere too like Mulberry support from 1944. That was the latest bug we have fixed.

Soon we hope to release a final version.

I have issues regarding Slitherine PM's. Messages I send end up in outbox, but don't go to sent messages. So if you've already applied, but never got an answer then you have the reason. Just send me your email so I don't have to reply.

I see I've answered several of your requests via PM, but never got a reply with email address. It seems you never got my reply asking for your email address. That is too bad. :(

The worst is that I can't report this to Slitherine since no PM's move from outbox to sent.
