Assaulting across bridges

Post by richafricanus » Fri Apr 25, 2014 10:06 pm

I couldn't find this on the forum so apologies if it's been covered before.

The rules say you treat crossing bridges like crossing an obstacle, so you need to move up to touch the bridge, then cross it next move, ending with your rear touching it on the other side. So far, I think that is clear.

How does one assault across a bridge if the target is not lined up defending it? Can you charge across the bridge without having moved up to it first, and without stopping on the other side with your back to it?

If it's not defended you just cross it if you are in column and were on the road. Otherwise you have to pass a CMT to cross over while in tactical.

When Assaulting I think it's like Buildings (to MOVE into a building you must be in contact at the start of your move, but to ASSAULT a building you just need to be in move range) so to assault a bridge you just have to be able to move across it (NO CMT, no stopping) however if across the bridge you have to be in March column (but there is no modifier for the river , but you have all the drawbacks of being march column in combat) as it's a defended obstacle you have to break defending infantry , if you can cross the river (without the bridge) you can assault in tactical across the river (rather than the bridge) you dont have to be march column but you cop the modifiers for the river (1 cohesion level lower for waist high, 2 for shoulder high NOT allowed if raging torrent) and you have to break defending infantry.

Assaulting bridges is hard, need to prep it with fire,

Check out obstacles, very back of rule book. Bridges are an obstacle.
If no one is in contact with the opposite side, no one is defending it so you just go across if in column, or CMT to cross in tactical if water level is low enough.
It's what is waiting on the other side that makes it so much less pleasant.

Thus the smartest way to "defend" a bridge is to sit less than 2 base depths away from the bridge on your side of the river. The only way for the opponent to cross or assault is in March column (cos they don't physically fit in the available space in tactical and would count 1 or 2 levels lower for combat) :D . Not pretty !

In any event, an assaulting unit would need to pass a CMT for crossing the obstacle if staying in tactical . . .

Or if they are really smart they just roll up some guns and blast the other side of the river. I think it's like a building, better to just ignore it if you can, destroy the rest of the army on your site of the river.
