How small can an army go in total battle groups?

Hi,

Tweaking around with 800pt 15mm armies and hit that old dilemma of quality vs quantity... Like in FOGAM/FOGR 8 battle groups will be too brittle? Plus due to board footprint, an army that size will spend most of their time in square and not being able to get an attack in?

If correct, shame as it makes some the Hollywood lists (French imperial guard as the obvious one) unsustainable in an open game? I reconigise it is just points cost against abilities.

In an open game is it 9+ battle groups is what you should be aiming for?

Cheers
Nigel

I took 8 units of Imperial Guard to a recent tournament here in New Zealand - really struggled.

I tried to attack concentrated, hard and fast. More often then not however assaulting without any prepatory softening met with repulse, or only limited gains. Meanwhile the enemy's numbers closed on open flank ...

Kit did better with 11 units of tooled-up Brits, but generally most armies had 12-14 units. I think that 10 units is probably the minimum needed for an all-arms force. You may be able to get away with less if you take a (predominantly) cavalry army, or if you adopt a defensive posture.

Cheers
Brett

8 does sound awfully small. Must have been why Nappy liked to use the Guard as clean up troops on beaten up enemies. I have seen others post that they have done poorly with a Guards army in tournaments as well. Blathergut won't even consider taking one against my Austrians, he thinks the veterans are too expensive to have too many of as well.

I think that is one more reason to go with 900 pts. At 800 pts, the armies/corps looks really small.

Maybe not 800 points when your learning the rules seems fine, when confident you can up it too 900.

I agree with starting out but eventually you will need to master attachments, cav commands and all the other "fun" stuff that a corps can bring!

800 good to learn with then move to 900 or even 1000, but 800 still gives a good game.
